I was very disappointed. Admittedly the filming was very good, but I was expecting much more. In future I will stick with grand opera. Am I wrong but did not Domingo have a famous aria to sing in Pagliacci? Where was it?

I did not enjoy this production of Fanciulla for several reasons, but mainly because Mara Zampieri (Minnie) was terrible. I thought her singing was very poor, without line, musicality or enthusiasm. She actually managed to make Puccini's music sound dreary. She didn't understand Minnie's character and acted in such a dull self-pitying way it made the whole plot unbelievable.

I thought Minnie's costumes were ugly to distraction, and the direction was unconvincing.

There was also some trouble with video playback on the DVD - it seemed to be very jerky, as though every other frame was missing. Sound quality was unaffected.

Placido Domingo was excellent, but unfortunately the quality of his singing only made ... Read More:

A reviewer on the Amazon US site dismissed this production because of Zeffirelli's conception. I must respectfully disagree with him. Zeffirelli is a known quantity -- he tends to mount productions that are traditional but just a bit over the top. Considering that this is Italian opera, I don't see anything wrong with that. (I still love his Met 'Bohème' no matter what others say.) As for the sets, which of course were designed by Zeffirelli, they are not really over the top, although they are lush and absolutely gorgeous to look at.

What makes a 'Butterfly' for me (aside from musical considerations, about which more below) the most important thing is that I believe the action. And in this production I do. Granted neither Cedolins ... Read More:

What is opera? An opera is a staged dramatic work that is set to music where the words are entirely or primarily sung. This definition may imply that the visual element is predominant to the uninitiated. Whilst this is important, an opera is so much more. Opera lives and dies by the music that accompanies the drama on stage. Where the words alone are sad, the music throws it into a whole other dimension making it heart wrenchingly poignant. If the words stir thought then the music aims straight for the soul and instinctive comprehension.

And so to this Aida that La Scala (thankfully) preserved for posterity. Surely it is one to hold up as a standard for it is beautifully sung by the principles and sympathetically backed up by the maestro ... Read More:

Even though this is a foriegn langauge film don't let put you off. This a real comedey of errors. In brief, several people are due to meet at certain points, and due to lateness and mistaken identity everyone goes of with someone they were not supposed to be meeting, or did they. This film is really charming, funny and easy to watch. Even though you may not speak Spanish you can follow what is going on. And besides you have the Sub Titles.
The film dosen't take itself too seriously and neither should you, have a laugh, feel for the characters and then put it back into your DVD collection and forget about it. Real Good Fun Film.

This performance, despite the first-class singing especially by Kathleen Battle, was ruined for me by the completely inappropriate appearnce of Pavarotti who looks more like the wild man of Borneo than a young village swain.
There are plenty of first class tenors who could more appopriately have been chosen to sing Nemorino. Alternatively, an actor could have mimed Pavarotti's off-stage voice. Either alternative would have been preferable.
As it is Pavarotti's grotesque form dominates many of the scenes rendering them risible.
