Absolutely brilliant adaptation and a great ensemble cast. I have to single out Eileen Atkins performance as the one which affected me most - the scene where she sits struggling with her ideas of convention as to whether she can attend the funeral in support of her friend is breathtakingly good - so much of what you understand is going on is not dialogue based but entirely down to her performance.

More drama of this quality please.

The film begins well, and the whole of the Italian part is fascinating, and holds one's interest. But once the plot, such as it is, moves to England, things begin to go downhill. The pace slows down to a crawl, the acting flags a little, and the dullness of the original novel begins to show through. E.M. Forster was obsessed with the hypocrisy, as he saw it, of the well-to-do English middle class in the early 1900s, and the novel is all about the virtually unbridgeable gap between staid and snobbish conventional well-to-do folk on the one hand, and broad-minded free thinkers on the other. The film succeeds brilliantly in conveying the stuffy, suffocating atmosphere of Edwardian upper middle class life as perceived by Forster, but unfortunately ... Read More:

Well its a good movie, but its certainly not Batman Begins. What ever happened to the idea of a total re-boot, showing the origins of Bond.

They had the chance to show Bond before and at the start of his service with M16. We all know he's a Commander in the Royal Navy, but where does this title come from and why would he join M16?

Bond should have been shown as a Commander in the SBS (the Navy's version of the SAS), these guys are often attached to other units such as 14 Int Unit, the forces own Intel gathering unit. Bond could well of been shown operating in Afganistan with the SBS at the start of the movie, and have the original mission tied with the overall story arc of a movie. Showing his work on attachment with ... Read More:

I was eager to watch this film after reading the book, and also loving the BBC adaptation of the story. However, I was slightly dissapointed with this. Maybe it's missing a certain Colin Firth as Mr Darcy.

I resisted seeing - or indeed even reading about - `Notes on a Scandal', as I had wrongly assumed it was the kind of tasteful, Oscar-baiting `Quality British Drama' that I loathe. With Cate Blanchette in tow, I thought I could smell theatre-honed, BAFTA-approved method acting a mile off. In fact, thematically and stylistically, it is nothing of the kind. Tellingly made by theatre director Richard Eyre, it is so cynical at heart that it comes across more like a satirical play than a drama. I don't know the novel (by Zoe Heller) this film was based on, but there is a misanthropic streak to `Notes on a Scandal' at odds with the kind of literary adaptation often served up by the British film industry. Films about obsessive admirers and jilted lovers are very much part ... Read More:

Mother and daughter, both outsiders, blow into stuffy old-fashioned French village (cobbled streets, quaint houses, romantic lamplight, no cars, no uncouth farmers) and bring with them the power to release the claustrophobic and straight-laced community from its inhibitions - not the first time on screen that this formula has been employed. What is unusual is the medium they use. Delicious and irresistible chocolate confectionery tempts everyone, and turns then into better, more liberated people. In the end, good defeats bad, love triumphs over hate, and everyone is released from cramping conventions to do their own thing. Very much a message of our times, in other words, and perhaps none the worse for that - though whether self-indulgence is always the best way forward ... Read More:

(no spoiler)

I've loved all the Bond movies, ever since Dr No.

Yes, some are better than others. Some Bonds are *certainly* better than others. But they're all the the same action-packed, no-brain-required, formulaic-but-fun glorious mess of boys' toys (explained by a grumpy 'Q' - 'DO try to pay attention, 007...'), glamor girls, explosions, wacky bad-guys and political incorrectness. Yep, this is the good stuff we've come to expect from a Bond Movie.

And then they made Casino Royale...

I'm sure a lot of people will love to see Bond reinvented like this, but if you're an old time fan like me, you won't. All the traditional elements are gone. It's all become deadly serious, to the point where it verges on being deadly dull. Or maybe ... Read More:

A nice change from the usual heaviness of period drama's, I really enjoyed this.

Very light-hearted and some laugh out loud moments. Colin Firth and Rupert Everett work well together and form a funny double act.

I was surprised that I actually liked Reece Witherspoon in this as I usually find her a bit irritating.

Another great performance from Judi Dench, what period drama is complete without her!

Definately worth a watch.

Shakespeare's Henry V is lavish, poetic and dramatic. The plot is simple: Young Henry V lays claim to the French throne and invades France to claim it. The rag tag English army make their way through France conquering city after city. On their way to Calais, they are met by superior, better equipped and better trained French army at Agincourt.

The English, aware of their inferior numbers and training, begin to despair. Henry V, the leader that he is, inspires his men in the famous words:

If we are marked to die
We are enough to do our country loss
And if [we are] to live the few men the greater share of honour
God's will I pray thee wish not one man more
He who outlives this day will stand a-tiptoe when this day is named
