DVD : Ode To Freedom - The Berlin Celebration Concert [1989]
The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989. On Christmas Day 1989, only six weeks later, due to the organizational skills of Leonard Bernstein (and others) an historic concert of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was given in the Schauspielhaus in the former East Berlin with instrumentalists and singers from a number of different countries. These included orchestra members from the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Orchestra of the Kirov Theater of Leningrad, the London Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and the Orchestre de Paris. The choruses were those of Bavarian and Berlin Radio as well as, unusually, the Children's Choir of the Philharmonie Dresden. Soloists were June Anderson (soprano, American), Sarah Walker (mezzo, British), ... Read More:

8 people are invited to a remote island "Indian Island" mansion by their host Mr. U. N. Owen; two people are already there as the butler and cook, a husband and wife team. Once there they find that their mysterious host has accused each of murder and commences to dispatch the guests in the order of a song of Ten Little Indians. Finding that they are cut off from the outside world they must find Mr. Owen and neutralize him before they are all dispatched. If it gets down to the last two you have a pretty good idea who it is.

All the clues are present; can you detect whodunit and why?

I believed the hype on the cover. 'terrific' and 'a very funny movie'. It was dullsville to the extreme. Admittedly I only watched until the funeral but by then all five of us had had enough. And not one single laugh or faint smile. Jack couldn't have been more miserable if he'd tried. Reading other reviews the overall opinion is that it is thoroughly sad. I don't want that from a film, I'm afraid. We need cheering up in the doom and gloom that is 2008 Britain!

There is no June Anderson in this production I think the details have been mixed up with another production.
I find Joan Sutherland too old to play Norma. Her son's are clearly too young for her. The volume reduces horribly when she sings Casta Diva, perhaps poor microphone positioning is to blame but could not the sound engineers correct that? Her singing is fine but lacks Callas's power and beautiful physicaly dramatic presentation and acting ability. Sutherland has a peculiar habit of always looking up, perhaps to achieve better projection of her voice into the theatre. Margaret Elkins is also alittle too old for her role but sings and acts divinely so we can over look it.
The sets are wonderful and so are the chorus and the costumes. The men seem the right sort of age for their ... Read More:
