Impeccable acting. Speech and deportment faultless. How nice to be able to hear every word spoken, unlike some recent Austen adaptations, e.g. Kate Beckinsale and Keira Knightley, both of whom were far too 21st century slovenly.

A wonderful adaptation of the original novel. The sets are authentic and the characters are well-done. There were some differences between the this film version and the book, of course; it would be almost impossible to have a perfect match to a novel that is so subtle and heart wrenching; but this version comes very close.

Highly recommended.

I have seen countless number of vampire movies from my Dad's collection. He
is a great 'Chris Lee' fan. I too love Mr.Lee's films, but, once I saw Gerard Butler, I was bowled over. This is a vampire film with a very nice twist. Chris.Plummer acts as the aged Van Helsing, who has kept the lethal
count's body in his high-security vault. The fun begins from that point. I
will not spoil the movie for new viewers by narrating the whole story in advance. All ye modern-day vampire lovers, take it from me: This is the Best. Better than the 'Blade' flicks and even better than 'John Carpenter's vampires'.

DVD : Fall (Ws Sub Ac3 Dol) [2008] (REGION 1) (NTSC)

A movie stuntman (Lee Pace from "Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day") in early 1920's Los Angeles is laid-up from a serious fall and is suicidal. An inquisitive little girl (amazingly cute Catinca Untaru) begins asking him questions and before anyone realizes it, he begins to tell her fanciful stories. Director Tarsem Singh channels Spielberg with his amazing and enormously grand cinematography. The loosely told love story with wild adventurers, heroes and princesses is shown in colorfully large scale in dramatic places. From crystal clear waters of an ocean reef to sand deserts and the Taj Mahal, the look is nothing short of mesmerizing (ever seen an elephant swim in a lush reef filmed from underneath?) The despondent stuntman tells the story in hopes ... Read More:

This vapid production is long, long, long at 88 minutes. Uninteresting characters, trite dialogue and mechanical acting unrelieved by even the occasional successful joke add up to... nothing at all. Admirers of Justine Waddell in earlier days are especially warned to stay away.

Technical flaws aside owing to the very grainy resolution, this is Great Expectations as it ought to be... arresting and deeply evocative. This is very, very good. Having admired David Lean's rather compressed version of Dickens' superb novel for many years and having endured the complete annihilation of the said novel in the abhorrent farrago starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke, it is an absolute joy to witness the sheer quality of realisation in this production. It vastly outclasses the other productions on every level although the Lean has great nostalgic charm and appeal. Relatively faithful to the novel, this is profoundly engaging. The acting is superb.Charlotte Rampling inhabits the character of Miss Havisham at a stellar level, evoking a sympathetic response to ... Read More:

DVD : Tess Of The D'Urbervilles [1998]
This video had been knocking around my local charity shop for a while, and I'd been vaguely debating whether or not to buy it. It was only £2 but I was just so tired of hammy, thespy, unsubtle adaptations of beloved books, which reduce sub-plots and characters to tokens and use completely rewritten, overly 21st century dialogue. I love the novel Tess of the D'Urbervilles, and I didn't want to see it ruined.

Just five minutes in, as soon as Justine Waddell appeared on screen, I knew this adaptation was going to do the book justice. Justine Waddell is exactly how I had pictured Tess and at the beginning exuded the simple but dignified country girl sweetness of Tess (also, she is absolutely beautiful in a natural way, just like Tess. The camera loves her). ... Read More:
