This 1990 World Cup concert, which launched the Three Tenors phenomenon, has a beautiful open air setting at the Caracalla Baths in Rome. This means however, a loss of acoustics. Orchestral sounds that would be enriched by a little reverberation literally drift away on the evening breeze. But the singing is excellent. They sing 4 solos each, then - after a sinfonia, or orchestral interlude - 3 more as a trio; 16 tracks in all. All three singers are perfectly at ease in the Romance languages, but struggle with German and English, sometimes quite badly. In the worst example, 'Maria' from West Side Story, Pavarotti bellows, "Say it soft and it's almost like praying". Well, we'll have to take his word for it.

Despite these imperfections, ... Read More:

Luciano Pavarotti at his absolute best, which is truly something to hear. Renata Scotto may not be everyone's ideal Mimi- she looks too much the sturdy healthy sort of girl, and her acting is terrible, but this is quibbling. For those who remember only the later, concert Pavarotti, or for those who have been disappointed with his acting in other things, this is the one to watch to see what all the fuss is about.
I would recommend skipping the Tony Randall [?] intro, its a bit cringe-worthy.

This is an orgy of garish colours and bad taste, which given the subject matter is perhaps not inappropriate. Certainly I think it has dated badly when compared with the less overpowering visual productions these days. Costumes and set are, in a word, lavish, and the filming does help you to follow what is going on. I thought the direction needlessly cut to close-ups of characters' faces, such as when one character is singing about another. My biggest gripe is that they missed the chance to make a truly moving ending by not having any fake blood on Edita Gruberovna (who sang brilliantly by the way, but doesn't look quite young enough for the part). So instead of enjoying the moving musical interplay between father and daughter, I was thinking "she should ... Read More:

This concert was set with a magnificent backdrop of the Eifel Tower. It began in the late afternoon with a large audiance seated within the inprovised auditorium, along with hundreds of spectators watching on large screens in the surrounding grounds.

The music was intoxicating with superb individual performances and magnificent joint renditions. All types of musical tastes were catered for classical, popular and easy listening. Pavarotti gave a superb rendition of Nessun Dorma much appreciated by the watching crowd.

As the evening drew to a close the lights of Paris with the backdrop of the Eifel Tower was truely brilliant.

This 1992 recording of Zeferelli's lavish production for La Scala, Milan, is an oddly unsatisfying set. All the vocal performances are sound, although none outstanding - all these monumental roles have been captured by others in better performances.
Pavarotti was at the end of his stage career here, and whilst vocally he still has that distinctive warm tone, physically he is unengaged and unengaging - hardly moving for most of his appearances except to enter or leave the stage (it was around this year that I saw him in Ballo in Maschera at Covent Garden when he had oxygen cylinders secreted around the set for a crafty breather mid-Act).
Daniella Dessi is in good voice but rather passionless; Sam Ramey is quite unconvincing yet vocally strong as Philip ... Read More:

Gorgeous music, conducted beautifully by James Levine, sung flawlessly by Pavarotti and Katia Ricciarelli in their prime, with costumes and sets and everything else as well very much up to the up to the mark.
Un Ballo is one of Verid's masterpieces and this is a great introduction to it, if you have not seen it live.
The interviews with the principals, as the bonus feature, were very good as well

This is an example of what happens when the ego of the director gets in the way of the art. A simple basic rule of filming singers is that the camera stays on the singer all the time they are singing. On this dvd Henri-Georges Clouzot constantly moves the camera off the singers half-way through the phrase. It's distracting and makes it impossible to focus properly on the music. Given that in this instance the singers include at least two of the greatest of the great, it's not merely irritating - it's insulting.

DVD : Verdi: Aida -- La Scala [1986]
What is opera? An opera is a staged dramatic work that is set to music where the words are entirely or primarily sung. This definition may imply that the visual element is predominant to the uninitiated. Whilst this is important, an opera is so much more. Opera lives and dies by the music that accompanies the drama on stage. Where the words alone are sad, the music throws it into a whole other dimension making it heart wrenchingly poignant. If the words stir thought then the music aims straight for the soul and instinctive comprehension.

And so to this Aida that La Scala (thankfully) preserved for posterity. Surely it is one to hold up as a standard for it is beautifully sung by the principles and sympathetically backed up by the maestro and his orchestra in the pit. ... Read More:

"the world's three most famous tenors" the description says and famous they are, but one shines above the rest and watching this performance I think he knew he was the best. It will be a long time before we see another performance such as this, if ever, and I think Pavarotti has the most natural tenor voice of them all. This DVD is a wonderful record of the definitive three tenors concert and the sound quality is superb.Who cares if there is a bonus disc with a karaoke version of 'O sole mio, who would want to listen to that when the maestro is there to sing it for you?
This DVD is a must, for the rest I prefer to just hear his beautiful voice on CD.
