What can you say about Mike Leigh that hasn't already been said ?
Sod all thats what !
Suffice to say he's the greatest living British director (only Ken Loach comes close) and all his greatest works are here. I'd already seen most of the films but time has dimmed the memories so i'm looking forward to rediscovering some classic stuff . I am , however , familiar with the three absolute masterpieces which are : Career Girls , Secrets & Lies and All Or Nothing , every one of which is beautiful and heartbreaking in its own subtle way . Worth the money for those three films alone .
PS Mike's newest , Happy - Go - Lucky is a good film in it's own right but does not approach the genius of his greatest work . Maybe a bit unfair ... Read More:

Mike Leigh can always be counted on when it comes to presenting truthful, emotional and compelling British cinema. Over the past twenty years, he has progressed beyond the limitations of cosy teatime telly to present us with something that resonates with a sense of reality far more potent than that of our previous king of kitchen-sink despair, Ken Loach. When at his best, Leigh is a creator of honest and heartfelt, slice-of-life pictures that move effortlessly from scenes of warm humour, to moments of crippling despair; whilst always offering us a collection of characters that are viewed through the eyes of a central protagonist who, during the course of the film, undergoes a series of life shattering episodes that will eventually change their lives ... DVD : Meantime [1984]
Nothing happens in this film. Everything happens in this film. Every viewer will have their own opinion on this, but this one thinks it a largely unsung masterpiece. There is no acting on show, merely people convincingly living the life they will always lead. Nothing happens in The Royle Family either...

I watched this film -ALL of it....waited for something to happen.NOTHING happened, just a meander through misery on a depressing coucil estate populated by disfunctional 2-dimensional stereotypes of white, British underclass.Grim and boring, slow soap opera.

This is wonderful stuff . I feel that this film has some of the best performances ever to be witnessed in a film and I mean all of the cast . Director Mike Leigh has got the perfect performance out of each and everyone of them. I recently watched Angels in America , a TV series I was informed, was acted out perfectly , but what you got was over acting to the point of farce , I feel like sending my copy of this film to it's director and saying this is how you do it ! The acting in Vera Drake is just so believable you could be in the room with them. If you enjoy real acting you must watch this Film
