Great special effects, but not a very good story, looks like it was trying to prop up the poor storyline with the special effets and the actors.
In all a disappointing movie.

Well if you find the first ten minutes or so silly and saccharin sweet hold on in there. Rather unimaginative directing and a poorly thought out sound track are well and truly rescued by an unusual and well crafted storyline.
The ending is a little rushed, but by then who cares because you have watched an entertaining movie. Recommended.

The trailer looked great and I had high hopes for this movie. Especially after seeing stardust. But this is a hopeless childish movie, produced for another braindead generation that thinks over the top means big bucks.

Too bad, they got a good cast, great sets but really poor directing. And it is missing the sense of fun and wit Stardust had so much of. Absolutely no joy to watch.

What might attract people to this film? It's a sci-fi story of good heritage, Kidman, Craig and Northam in lead roles and everything seemed to be in place for a riveting watch.

But it's not. It feels thin and unfulfilled throughout...the plot builds and builds and then it seems like the producers got bored with their own movie and brought the story to an abrupt end. I gave it two stars because Ms Kidman is always very watchable, but with Daniel Craig it reminded me of some of the naff films Roger Moore did alongside his tenure as bond. I'm sure Craig will shortly redeem himself in the next 007 outing.

There is some good atmospheric cinematography and stunt work, but everything considered it's a bit of a disappointment. And a waste of a good Jag...

This film is based on the first book in the best selling `His Dark Materials' series by Phillip Pullman and although I haven't read any of that series I did enjoy this adaptation. As I have not read the book that this film is based on I cannot comment about how close it is to that but from the comments of others I can deduce that this isn't too good an adaptation but I feel that it more than makes up for this with some truly spectacular CGI and some adequate performances by the all star cast.

Of the cast Nicole Kidman as the villainous Mrs Coulter was a surprising favourite of mine as I have never previously enjoyed any of her performances but she was unexpectedly good here. Another noteworthy performance was that of Sir Ian McKellen, he is always enjoyable and he was ... Read More:

The subject is banal : Paris, 1900, the famous Moulin Rouge music-hall and their never-ending shows that are titillating and mysterious, fascinating and prodigious. Love above everything else, romantic love with its passion, the little thing deep down inside, dramatic love of course, melodramatic even. The actress of such a show is supposed to finance the show, and the work of everyone else, by providing the patrons, the generous financiers with some carnal pleasure, illusionary or real according to the desires and potencies of these rich even if rather aging males. The melodrama is reached when the actress is dying of consumption. The red of blood is mixing with the green of absinthe. But that is without taking into account Nicole Kidman who transforms that baroque and rococo tall tale ... Read More:

Or things that scream, or caress the keys of a piano, or ... This film is a gem - such a refreshing change from blood and guts horror. This is true atmospheric horror, the tension built with every scene, and with every strange character that appears.
The actors are superb - beautifully cast (including the veteran comedian Eric Sykes) and beautifully directed in a location that gives an oscar-worthy performance.
The two children are remarkable in their roles - for me, the prize going to the most sinister small girl ever encountered on screen. (Why is it that children in film are generally so much better than children on telly ? Is it just that the casting directors of feature films are more intelligent than their telly counterparts, and know what they are looking at ? Probably.) ... Read More:

Im sorry, but for a romantic comedy, this was absolutely dreadfull.
I was literally sat there throughout the movie, sitting there thinking COME ON MAKE ME LAUGH!!! I didnt once!

I was also really very disappointed by the way this movie wasted the best actress in the movie Kristin Chenoweth. She didnt get anywhere near enough screen time!

A very very boring and disappointing movie!

"Mrs Dalloway said she would buy the flowers herself". From this opening line of Virginia Woolf's novel of the same name, this marvellous movie blossoms. It is the story of three women whose lives are affected in some way by this line: Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) writes the line at her Richmond home in 1926; Laura Brown (Julianne Moore) reads the line in 1951 suburban Los Angeles; and Clarissa Vaughan (Meryl Streep) acts out the line in 2001 Manhattan. These are all highly-nuanced performances, betraying the fleetest of thoughts and emotions in silent actions. Stephen Dillane is a totally believable hard-pressed Leonard Woolf, whilst Miranda Richardson is Virginia's sympathetic but ultimately distant sister. Even Eileen Atkins plays a cameo as a Manhattan florist.

A great film let down by the first 2 minutes. The narration at the start tells you what is going to happen.
However, a great entertaining film all the same. Making use of modern music to tell the story in what is really a modern Opera, this film has some wonderfull bits. The use of Queen's The show must go On is outstanding. Worth buying
