The shaky camera techniques aside (used so well in films like Saving Private Ryan and the 2nd and 3rd of The Bourne movies) Cloverfield has nothing new to say really. I love horror and sci-fi, so desperately tried to enjoy this / be amazed but it didn't pull me in. Characters that had no depth .....despite, or in spite of...the fly on the wall technique. The characters always came across as actors trying to look and sound as though they weren't acting. Furthermore, it's unavoidable for the viewer not to reference with 9/11 at some point.. intentionally or not on behalf of the film makers... the surprise and shock of what's suddenly happening...the smoke and ash raining down..the location of New York...the horror of the destruction.......the ... Like the Matrix 10 years ago Cloverfield has set a new standard for action cinema. Movie snobs often dismiss genre movies like this one as low brow. But the genius of Cloverfield is it's structure; the whole movie is an exercise in keeping an audience on the edge of their seats and it works. Every time it looks like things couldn't possibly get worse they do, then just when things look like they've calmed down a tad the next shock hits. None of which sounds that impressive, until you see just how well it's done here. Although there's nothing oscar worthy from the cast the films is buoyed along by some convincing performances and humor in particular is played just right: it's funny but not so funny that you relax. I have now seen this film twice on blu ray and absolutely loved the film from start to finish. Looks and sounds amazing on hi- def. Highly recommended. 10\10.
