From a dramatic point of view Die Walkure is arguably the most intense of the four parts of The Ring, owing it's success (or failure) to the ability of a cast to act as well as sing, and time has proved the success of Chereau's casting.

Gwyneth Jones' Brunnhilde has now become almost legendary. While her acting ability may not quite match up to Behrens, who followed her in Hall and Solti's subsequent Bayreuth production, she throws her formidable vocal might into the part with an enthusiasm worthy of Birget Nilsson. No-one is going to worry about her occasional tendancy to overact the part so long as she can sustain that voice! She really shows her greatest dramatic strength during her extended dialogues with Wotan.

Some people hate it, others love it. There is much to say about Patrice Chereau's direction but Pierre Boulez is a much better conductor than he is a composer. On this recodring you will hear (and see) the very elite of Wagner singers, like Donald McIntyre (as Wontan), Manfred Jung (as Siegfried), Heinz Zednick as (Mime as well as Loge) and Herrmann Becht as Alberich. No matter if enjoy Chereau (most people seem not to) but you can probably live with that because of the great musical performance.

DVD : Wagner [1984]
A great film about a great man - albeit with some unpleasant traits.

Dramatic portrayal of a dramatic life, from his early days as rising composer to friend, confident and 'in-house' composer to King Ludwig II of Bavaria.. Features all the struggles as he tries to stage the 'unperformable' Ring.

Filmed on location and with great supporting acting from Redgrave, Guilgud et al. Most magical is the way the music is blended in with the action. The great chords of lament as the beginning of Act III of Tristan play as King Ludwig reviews with dismay the remains of his defeated army, for example.

Subtle, yet powerful, telling of his affair with Cosima.

A joy to watch, seven hours is just not enough!!
