Absolutely brilliant adaptation and a great ensemble cast. I have to single out Eileen Atkins performance as the one which affected me most - the scene where she sits struggling with her ideas of convention as to whether she can attend the funeral in support of her friend is breathtakingly good - so much of what you understand is going on is not dialogue based but entirely down to her performance. More drama of this quality please.

It just doesn't get better than this- as good if not better than season 1

I love Life on Mars, John Simm is fantastic in it. A DVD you just have to own. Great cars and music too...

I absolutely love this show. I think another reviewer said thirtysomethings will enjoy this more and I have to agree. While Life on Mars was brilliant, a lot of the time it did seem to be nothing more than a pastiche of the brilliant Sweeney and Gene Genie nothing more than a piss-take of the legendary Jack Regan. That is not to slag it off LoM was groundbreaking and I adore John Simm and he made Sam Tyler such an empathetic character it was easy to sympathise with Sam's plight. However (deep breath)...Life on Mars is a different kettle of fish altogether. The first thing that struck me was how cleverly it is filmed. This is a hugely enjoyable film that balances old-fashioned prejudices with daring activism. The WI girls join up to raise money for a sofa for the relatives' room, at the hospital where one of their husbands was treated for leukemia, by posing nude for a calendar. The delightful gung-ho of the girls (especially Helen Mirren's Chris) is tempered by the grief of Julie Walter's character as she misses and pays tribute to her late husband (a moving, lovely performance by John Alderton) and the knock-on effects on members of the womens' families. Many hilarious scenes are juxtaposed with sad instances of prejudice, the dangers of exploitation and the constant spectre of cancer that both scares the women and spurs them on. This is by far the best film about football hooligans in my opinion. Although in a lot of parts you don't get to see the actual violence you know whats happening and its the power of the story that grips you. The charactors are really well developed and you feel like you know them by the end of the movie. I'd recommend this movie to anyone.

I never saw this series when it was on TV and ordered it on the basis of the other reviews. I am so glad I did. The acting is excellent with realistic captivating stories. I watched all the episodes back to back as I thought it was so good. This is real value for money.
