the newly restored print is just sparkling as is hayworth as gilda in one of the most fascinating female portrayals of all times ,
the noir story is similar to both CASABLANCA &NOTORIOUS ,but thanks to the electrifying chemistry between rita and glenn ford as the american sailor in buenos aires involved in gambling racket and illegal cartels, the love affair becomes fascinating to watch,
the dialogue is so good to be called great at times like the quote ,i hate you so much it is almost exciting ,
add to it the moody ,atmosphere with great B&W photography and the magical noir will just whisk you away with it's force of a cinematic typhoon.
the director has staged some great songs and dances with rita lipsynching to anita ... Read More:

This is a movie centred around a marvellous story.

David Niven plays a 'fake' Major. This is because he hides a secret past which is about to become public knowledge at a small Hotel where he has been staying some time. He is 'sweet' on a 'spinster-ish' woman (Deborah Kerr) who's dominated by her possessive mother (Gladys Cooper) There are other stories within this picture, but the story between 'The Major' and 'Sybil' is by far the most touching and absorbing. There are some wonderful scenes in this, and David Niven gives an outstanding performance and gets much sympathy from the Viewer.

This film not only shows how cruel and judgmental people can be, but how the best can be brought out after their shame - and in ... Read More:

Coming straight from a viewing of The Third Man, one of my all time favourites, and a great performance from Welles, The Lady From Shanghai was a bit of a dissappointment. Welles's acting is the foremost problem. It's as if he was unsure of what to make of the character, where to place him so to speak. Welles who would usually steal the whole scene with the tiniest gesture, here struggles to get involved in his character and give it any sort of real life and consistence.
The other problem is the flow of the movie. Apparently an hour was cut, much to Welles's dismay, and it certainly left the movie very disjointed at places.
Why should you give it a view, then? Well, for one thing the three other principal characters all have something to ... Read More:

In 'Gilda' and 'Affair in Trinidad', Rita Hayworth performs dance routines which are not the kind of routines found in movie musicals. The routines in 'Gilda' and 'Trinidad' give the impression that Hayworth is a musical and rhythmical person who is responding naturally to the music but is not a dancer. These routines work very well as Rita is a great mover but if anyone is in any doubt about her talent as a dancer then watch 'You Were Never Lovelier' - she is a sheer delight to watch. She is a fabulous dancer and a wonderful partner for Fred Astaire. 'The Shorty George', a tap routine, is my favourite next to Astaire's wonderful solo number.

This film has a silly, nonsensical storyline but this is part of its charm. The characters are engaging, ... Read More:

The only good thing about this movie is Frank Sinatra, and in particular his memorable performance of 'The Lady is a Tramp'. Cut this out and throw the rest away. Kim Novak's performance is wooden and Rita Hayworth's not much better. Moreover the rest of Rodgers and Hart's music is devalued by the fact that neither of the leading ladies are capable of singing, so their voices had to be dubbed by others. What a con'when others could have been recruited to fit the bill. Without Sinatra 'no stars'.

This is one of the popular musicals of the war years (1944), starring Rita Hayworth and Gene Kelly. This love story is a comedy drama about a chorus girl named Rusty "Chicken" Parker (Rita Hayworth) working at McGuire's club owned by her boyfriend Danny McGuire (Gene Kelly). Columbia Studios made this a showcase for Rita Hayworth, but gave Gene Kelly control over the film, especially about dance routines, singing and choreography. The film has lavish costumes, great dance routines, and excellent music. Several dance routines performed by Danny and Rusty includes songs by Jerome Kern and Ira Gershwin. The classic song "Long Ago and Far Away" won the 1944 Academy Award for best musical scoring. Danny's dance with Rusty; "Put Me to the Test", or the joyful dance "Make Way for Tomorrow" ... I loved the pairing of Fred Astaire and Rita Hayworth in the delightfully fanciful "You Were Never Lovelier" with its beautiful Jerome Kern score and elegant dance numbers, but this earlier offering fails to live up to the same standard.

The plots in these movies are always pure fluff (usually full of romantic misunderstandings and a bit of partner swapping) which only really act as a filler between the musical numbers, but are normally made watchable by some witty dialogue and entertaining performances from assorted character actors. However, the dialogue in this is unusually banal and bereft of any real humour, making the non-musical scenes extremely tedious.

As for the music, it's certainly not Cole Porter at his best, to put it kindly. He's not in his element writing ... Read More:

This movie holds up well enough in the 21st century. The effects are dated (not CGI but what is less convincing now?) but fit well with the B/W cinematography, the plot (no longeurs) and the ensemble acting. Grant not in his trade mark lounge suit but hey we've got Rita Heyworth! Jean Arthur taking billing over Hayworth, but not for long,to be remembered in Shane. And a still exciting ending predating "Wages of Fear". A welcome addition to collectors of those glamorous films of the 30's.
