This is a great performance with lots of fun. Anna Netrebko is a stunning Adina. Rolando Villazón is a clumsy but charming Nemorio. Ildebrando D'Arcangelo is a credible fraud and a great actor. L'Elisir d'Amore is a funny story with a happy end. You will enjoy it.

What a travesty of Traviata! With the world's most beautiful soprano (physically and musically)what were the production team thinking about? Why do these people imagine that they can improve on the original. Gilding the lily rarely works. If only this had been done in the same way as the Solti version, i.e. traditionally. It could then have been the benchmark Traviata for years.

This is a live performance from Barcelona in 2007 featuring two of the hottest names in opera at the moment - Natalie Dessay and Rolando Villazon - as the young lovers. It is a somewhat uneven performance, and the two are rather mismatched, but there are moments of absolute wonder which make this recording worth repeated viewing. Dessay is a natural French speaker, Villazon is obviously not, and at times it sounds like they are almost singing in different languages, and his Italianate sound is sometimes too strong to overlook. And yet, his rendition of "En fermant les yeux" is so stunningly beautiful it could make grown men weep, and is the best moment on the whole disc. Incredible and brilliant! You have to take into account this is a contemporary production and in set in modern times - not the 19th century. If you are not prepared for this and expect something traditional then look else where. Willy Decker has done a brilliant job here and made something very special. I can't fault it but I reckon its worth seeing the "Bonus DVD" first as this explains the concept and how the production was made. As ever Anna and Rolando were electric on stage, with also a fine performance by Thomas Hampson. Buy it - you won't regret it.
