This box set, along with Abigail's Party and Happy-Go-Lucky (both available separately), will give you a comprehensive - and comprehensively moving and hilarious - understanding of Mike Leigh's vision. He's always painted in broad strokes, with sometimes heavy-handed caricatures, but within those strokes are subtle moments of great emotional truth, and this set proves how versatile Leigh has been within different genres. A bargain and a treasure.

A marvellous film, one of Mike Leigh's best. Filmed in London - near Roman Road E3 and also in King's Cross - for the most part this is a compelling human portrayal of different sorts of decay, and the occasional human orchid that can rise from that compost. Marvellous performances from the actors playing the three central characters too, Shirley, Cyril and Cyril's mum.

Fun. raunchy and enjoyable entertainment. The cast obviously had a ball playing it. Isn't that what this type of D.V.D is all about.? The scenery and costumes were a dream and so subtle. I had a very happy evening watching this.

Mike Leigh can always be counted on when it comes to presenting truthful, emotional and compelling British cinema. Over the past twenty years, he has progressed beyond the limitations of cosy teatime telly to present us with something that resonates with a sense of reality far more potent than that of our previous king of kitchen-sink despair, Ken Loach. When at his best, Leigh is a creator of honest and heartfelt, slice-of-life pictures that move effortlessly from scenes of warm humour, to moments of crippling despair; whilst always offering us a collection of characters that are viewed through the eyes of a central protagonist who, during the course of the film, undergoes a series of life shattering episodes that will eventually change their lives for ... This film demands on putting every person into sterioticial roles, even on the front cover it has pictures of the main charecters and labels them like Geek or Sex freak. This can be sometimes funny but mainly annoying because nobody is just one thing. This film is slightly surial and although having a frankly ludicrous basis it handles it with humour and charm. Not being an American teen movie its significantly less glossy and is much more gritty. After being set up on a date this girl desides to go to this virtual reality confrence where she desighnes her perfect man. but while she is making him there is a explosion and the man she creats come to life. This movies really isnt as simple as it seems there are very many twists and turns. Although there ... Read More:

This is an excellent film showing British acting and production at its best! The story is absorbing and has some surprising twists before the end. A worthy addition to my collection.
