I am absolutely addicted to this version of Jane Eyre, having watched it another 4 times this last week alone! And I'm not ashamed to admit it either! It's perfect in every way and there's nothing left out of importance. O.K. it could have done with showing more of the young Jane at Lowood Institution, but it wasn't a necessity. This tells the story of Jane Eyre, a poor, downtrodden girl who after becoming an orphan as a baby, is sent to live with her Aunt and Uncle and their children. The Uncle passes away and Jane is left to the cruelty of her Aunt and cousins. After 10 years of bad treatment, her Aunt sends her to Lowood School and turns her back on Jane. All the intellectual discourse in the world cannot disguise that these films were deeply disappointing. I am a huge Poliakoff fan and have viewed all his screen works that I am aware of starting with Caught on a Train. This film adopts the familiar surreal and highly atmospheric scenes with the most beautiful direction and cinematography. As usual, acting of the absolutely highest quality adds to the excellence. Sadly, however, to be truly brilliant, as most of Poliakoff's works are, there needs to be a good yarn. A story than draws in the viewer and keeps their attention. Adapted from international bestseller non-fiction novel by Truman Capote; it was a real sensation of late 1950s, a true crime classic based on 1959 Halcomb, Kansas murders. Thanks to writer/producer/director Richard Brook's journalistic background, it has a good taste of docu-drama in and of itself. His directorial touch is amazing. Everything unfolds as it should, and the story clicks along without a wasted second. Ok, if you know what a 55 Chevy looks like and if you know what a 1970 GTO looks like and the colour Orbit Orange means anything to you you will like this film. Yes it is a bit slow but enjoy it for what it is, a home brew 55 drag racer takes on a piece of Detroit Muscle. The home brew crew need to do a bit of street and strip racing to survive on the journey - are they drag racing nomads at the start of the 70's. The GTO represents the middle age desk jocky who isn't satisfied with his lot and wants somthing else - but probably isn't sure what. As a Middle aged Mondeo driving desk jocky who always wanted to be the driver of the 55 this sometimes slow film has been one of my faves for the last 20 years.

You can probably tell from the title that this is not a series of hard-hitting thrillers. It is another in that fine tradition of British made-for-Sunday-evening picturesque dramas, which allow you to slump in your armchair and while-away the end of your precious weekend without undue stress or mental stimulation. The weather is always sunny, the gardens are glorious, the mystery is not too convoluted, and the murders are gore-free ( rather like Agatha Christie in scare-factor - i.e not at all ). I find them easy to watch and charming. Perfect escapist relaxation on a dark and dreary winters evening.
