There is nothing I can add to the reviews for each of the individual films which rate as classics in the war film genre. I'm of that generation that can remember it being a really big event especially at Christmas when the Great Escape was on the telly and like many people can remember it scene by scene but still feel its better than most modern films relying on computer generated effects. Myself an ex RAF man its always thrilling to see the aerial scenes of the Battle of Britain made ironically with the help of the then fascist Spanish air force who where still flying Heinkels, Dorniers and Meschershmits a left over from Franco's friendship with Hitler. A bridge too far made in 1977 came later but is true to Corneleus Ryans book being historically ... Read More:

Barry Lyndon hosts all the elements of something which is flawless, the genius of kubrick's vision and tenacity to gain perfection is seen through-out. Kubrick had custom camera lenses made by NASA so he could film in natural candle light only - this scene in paticular has a sense of texture and tone which a painting could provide. The performances are staggeringly brilliant and you feel the reserveness of the characters emotions and feelings, the battle scenes are shot with such beauty and realism that you believe what your seeing. On top of all that...this is the greatest rise and fall story ever told.

I think its worth a few pounds when you can possess this forever...

A brilliant film with a moral message that is as true today as it was when the movie was made.

Before Hill hit the big time with The Warriors and Southern Comfort, he made what still stands today as one of the great 'car chase' movies. Not only is it an excuse to show off some skillful stunt driving, but it is an enticing blend of crime, noir, and action with a bleak tone and some excellent dialogue. Featuring strong performances from Bruce Dern and Ryan O'Neil, The Driver has become a forgotten cult classic.

O'Neil stars as a getaway driver for robbers, mostly inept robbers. In the style of a hit-man they must find a way to contact him, and once the the job is done he gets his money and vanishes. He is at the top of his game, and no matter how many cops they send after him, he always manages to get away ... Read More:

'What's Up Doc?' is a fabulous film, endlessly rewatchable, totally madcap, brilliantly scripted, cast, directed, you name it. A total success.
'Nuts' is highly watchable, if you like Barbra Streisand, has good support from Richard Dreyfuss, and... well, it's all a bit predictable and sentimental.
'Up the Sandbox' is a minor film that's like the curate's egg. I like the idea of the film, and Barbra's performance is unusually understated. But there are too many very long daydream sequences that are really quite tedious and unbalance the film. Not bad though, if you're a fan.
'The Main Event' is a tedious boxing movie starring a heavy-looking Ryan O'Neal and a Barbra desperately trying to move the leaden plot along. Very, very boring and badly done.
It's a nice set ... Read More:

Pacino is of course brilliant, portraying a fraying publicist trying to make some meaning in his life. Tea Leoni, Kim Basinger, Ryan O'Neal and Richard Schiff are among the strong supporting cast.

Our protagonist is sent by one of his dwindling star clients to 'clean up' his mess by getting the star's latest girl on a plane. Beaten down by work, age and drugs, Eli instead finds himself in possession of incriminating material and tangled up in city politics; but all he wants to do is make his benefit event a success and then retreat to a peaceful retirement with his sister-in-law's friendship. For all his media savvy, he's caught in the grip of forces he can barely perceive, much less escape: his self-knowledge comes too late.

It's a melancholy character piece ... Read More:
