This is really good value for money as a double pack. Both films are worth watching in their own right.

The American view film "Flags of Our Fathers" does have some really good action in it aka "Saving Private Ryan" - just as you'd expect these days. The thing I didn't like was the continuous back-and-throwing from the future look at how these "heroes" got on with regard the famous picture of the soldiers planting the flag, back to the action and then back again. It didn't flow very well for me.

At least it's not a gung-ho look at war which I was thankful for!

The Letters from Iwo Jima I found more satisfying. From the Japanese point of view it appeared more sensitive. Again it doesn't show a pro-war ... Read More:

Some people, including a lot of critics, seem to think this movie was about prejudices. They're only partly right. If you think about it, the racism expressed in each scene and encounter is too contrived, too well set up, too obvious for it to carry any weight. Racism, in reality, is more subtle than that. Therefore, I just didn't find that aspect convincing. What I did like, however, - and this was more important in the movie for me - was the spiritual dimension to the film, and in particular the theme of redemption. The Matt Dillon character is a prime example. Matt plays a LAPD officer who has prejudiced views, and we first we see him frisking and sexually assaulting a black woman on the side of the highway; then towards the end of the film we ... The story opens in 1932 at the country estate of Lord and Lady McCordle; guests arriving for the weekend include friends and relatives and even a Hollywood movie producer. Of course, they bring their servants who bustle around downstairs to make life grand for their betters upstairs. When someone is found dead - and it appears he was murdered twice - everyone seems to have a motive.

The superb cast of British megastars is led by Maggie Smith who steals the show with her funny/snobby countess role, Helen Mirren who is tragically efficient as the housekeeper, and Kelly Macdonald who plays a wonderfully meek ladies' maid. Each of the wealthy guests is incredibly spoiled and oblivious to the world downstairs, where the servants have their own ... Read More:

What do you do with an FBI traitor who for 20 years was feeding serious secrets to the Soviets and then to Russia? If you're the FBI, you don't follow up on tips about the guy, you don't get curious that his expensive life style doesn't match his FBI salary, you ignore his extensive, private hetero kinkiness even though a murmur about homosexuality would get another person booted out the door, and you sure don't want to look too hard and then find a scandal on your hands like the CIA's Aldrich Ames.

It was in 1979, three years after he joined the FBI, that Robert Hanssen started his career as a spy. It wasn't until 1999 that it occurred to the FBI to look closely at Hanssen. At one point, concerned about the possibility of a mole in their midst, the ... Read More:

Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy) stars as Kathryn, a manipulative woman who places a bet with her step brother Sebastian that he can't get the principal's stepdaughter Annette into bed.

Based on Choderlos de Laclos' novel, Cruel Intentions brings a dark and sexy tale of lies, manipulation and romance to our screens in a dramatic and diverse way, with superb acting and excellent direction and acting.

The lead three actors, Gellar, Phillippe (Flags of our fathers) and Witherspoon (Walk the line) are all tremendous in their respective roles and do the plot justice by giving sexy and sophisticated performances in one of the sexiest dramas of the 90's.

The plot is very character driven, which was helped along by these great performances. Focusing strongly upon ... Read More:

Be warned! This film is NOT for gore hounds although it is a slasher. There is no extreme violence here, but is is a lot more suspenseful than scream or most of the other slasher films out there. The characters are sympathetic and you really care about them - very rare in this genre indeed. A descent entry in this genre, but as any slasher movie, not a must see.

A very good movie. When I first went to see it, I have to admit I didnt expect much just because the title seemed so bland. However as the story played out you can see how true to life the comments and reactions were. All the scenes were great but the memorable comment for me was the politician who was robbed by two black guys but doesnt want to lose the black vote so wants a photo of him pinning a medal on a black person to go out to show him as anti racist. Then when he suggests someone he is informed that the person is infact Iraqi. "Well he looks black!" is just hilarious. When told the Iraqis name is "Saddam" his reply was hilarious

I'm a huge fan of the mythos of the origial Studio 54, but unfortunately Miramax wouldn't let Mark Christopher have the final say. Ryan Phillipe's suprisingly good performance is cut, to highlight his torso and pout - and Mike Myers isn't given HALF enough time to show off his amazing take on Steve Rubell. Neve Cambell is as dull as usual, but gladly her on screen time is very limited.
Overall, quite a depressing film - but only in the same way that Saturday Night Fever isn't a disco at all - it's a harsh telling of a 70s story.
I was pleasantly surprised by this film, but it would have been SO much better if Miramax had let Christopher do what he intended, and kept all the cuts. What we need is a director's cut - that would get 5 stars.
