After watching the DVD last night, and finding it appallingly bad to say the least, today I went through the comments posted over the years and I was relieved to find some one-star ones among the five-star ratings.
This doesn't even deserve a one star. Zero stars, more like it, as somebody else wisely pointed out.
I found it really hard to sit through the whole movie. It is just SOOO BAD it's untrue, when compared to Guy Ritchie's movies. Those are funny gangster films, and with a plot. Not this crap.
DO NOT, repeat DO NOT, waste your money on this.

This blu-ray transfer is the collectors edition that was recently released on DVD and features the same 16:9 transfer and the same extras. If you are a fan of the movie, then I can only add here that the HD transfer is another gear or two up from the DVD and looks great at 1080p for a film of its age that was shot using some unorthodox old fashioned techniques and a lot of improvisation in places, as revealed in a fascinating feature amongst the plentiful extras, which includes a directors commentary, deleted scenes, a fascinating making of etc (including Gary Oldman throwing a strop and walking off set at one point - great fun!). It wasn't shot digitally so don't expect blu-ray miracles but its plenty good enough and a terrific film. The disc ... Read More:

None of your American cinematic polish - just real life British drama. The film starts with Jude Law's mates meeting up after his funeral. They watch a film Jude has made about the friends unbeknown to them, showing amongst other things their infidelity, lies and cheating. Watching the film makes uneasy viewing for the friends as warts and all, everything they would have wanted to keep secret is viewed by everyone. A clever idea and excellently executed by a fine set of Brit actors. Ray Winstone as mouthy and menacing as usual. Wonderful!

I read Bram Stoker's Dracula and absolutely loved it, so after reading that Francis Ford Copella's version was the closest to the book, I felt I had to watch it.
If you are a fan of the book, I have to say: never, ever, ever watch this film. I find it hard to believe that anyone who has read Stoker's Dracula could find any redeeming features about this film. Every character is twisted and changed from those in the book.
Mina Harker is flirtatious and stupid, and falls in love with Dracula whilst having no concern for Jonathan whatsoever. Van Helsing actually seems mad, I think they tried to put some humour into the film by overexaggerating his character (this isn't a criticism of Anthony Hopkins, I think he's a brilliant actor, it's ... I took a punt on this dvd for a couple of quid, as the blurb on the box and the cast list (Law, Frost, Pertwee, Bean) led me to expect a kind of hard edged futuristic Mad Max thriller. But I was fooled.
How this was ever given an 18 cert I can't imagine, because its actually a kid's film. Badly acted, badly filmed, and incredibly dated (made in 1993 it looks more like 1981) it comes across as one long advert for BMW Motors, which it probably was. Sadie Frost's appalling Ulster accent doesn't help things either.
This is the only dvd i've ever thrown straight in the rubbish bin. It's not even bad in a funny way, it just hurts to watch it. Were the early nineties really this awful?

I wonder why movies like A Fish Called Wanda become a blockbuster, and others, like Splitting Heirs for instance, remain largely unknown. The movie is excellent. The actors are wonderfully funny. I think in every aspect it should be in league with the likes of Fish called Wanda. Not only because of the participation of John Cleese...

BTW, having recently watched Kind Hearts and Coronets, I couldn't help but find similarities in the plot. The outcome was different, but the protagonist's intention was the same. For me, it's always a treat to find links between films or books that I like. Definitely recommendable.

A well-acted film based on historical fact, well worth watching. The later Warsaw uprising by Poles in 1944, went on for longer (at least 63 days), but still the brave fighting spirit of the Ghetto Uprising is to be saluted.
