Chitty Chitty Bang Bang [1968] 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' is my second favourite after 'The Wizard Of Oz'. 'Chitty' stars Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes, Lionel Jeffries, James Robertson Justice and Robert Helpmann. Though this release onto DVD is the Full Screen version of this film i personally prefere it due to the fact this is a wonderful transfere to Disc, with it's lovely deep colours and so beautifully restored it looks like a modern film. Dick Van Dyke is superb as the children's father who rescues a vintage racing car from a junk yard and gets the car working again. He decides the car should be called 'Chitty Chitty Bang Bang' and he tells his children a story of how the car is magic and able to float and fly. Everything is so wonderful ... Read More:

The quality of the film's transferance onto DVD is poor and the dubbing in particular is suspect, but this film is undoubtedly a classic. It's apparently the earliest example of a 'portmanteau' horror film(,a film which narrates a series of separate tales). Here, an architect visits a country house and tells the guests of a recurring nightmare he's had about the house and the inhabitants, prompting them to relate a series of supernatural experiences, the creepiest of which is the last one, involving a ventriloquist (Michael Redgrave) and a seemingly independent dummy. When the tales have been related, there is an horrific climax and a disturbing twist: the protagonist seems to be stuck in a nightmarish 'groundhog day' scenario.
All of the stories are entertaining ... Read More:

You don't get better 'cinema' than this. Such characters and settings and a feeling for the age it was set in are so difficult to capture but the effect of a great cast that will never be bettered has created a masterpiece of British cinema and a great tribute to the story teller from which it came in H G Wells.

Poor Mr Polly. Dreaming of a life of romance, adventure and heroism. Only to be found in the pages of books that he has to hide from his nagging and unadventurous wife. The score enriches the pages of his meanderings with their comedic and nostalgic tempo as Mr Polly struggles to find his place in a fast moving world filled with mishap, fright and hopefulness.

There is something here for anyone who feels lost and without direction or fulfilment in romantic ... Read More:

OH YES!! I'd waited years for this to come out on Video and it didn't, and then DVD, now it's finally happened, and I still can't believe it!

One of Googie Withers' greatest movies (I contacted Ms. Withers about this movie some years ago and she was kind enough to reply from Australia) Googie made many great films during this period of her career, and was one of Britain's biggest film stars, but no part had as many close-up shots as this which are always so very difficult to do, and very demanding.

Pearl (Withers) is married to Publican Joe Bond who mistreats her. Having hardened her own persona to become accustomed to this she takes advantage of an impressionable young youth (Gordon Jackson) to forge her way into 'disposing' of her unwanted husband. ... Read More:

DVD : Dead of Night/Queen of Spades [1945] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Essential double bill of two of the finest films of the 40's.

Dead of Night(1945)Much heralded pormanteau of horror tales directed by Charles Crichton and Cavalcanti amongst others is justifiably remembered for the final segment - Michael Redgrave and that dummy! The tales are linked together by the gathering of a group of people at a country mansion, one of whom is convinced he knows everyone present because he has met them all in his dreams.
Variable in chills, each tale is memorable in it's own way with Robert Hamer's "Mirror"segment being particularly creepy.Redgrave's tour de force performance in the final tale is the icing on the cake,

Queen of Spades(1948)Slow moving but utterly riveting supernatural tale(based on a Pushkin short story)is a forgotten gem with an ... Read More:
