This DVD version is absolutely fantastic. I watch it all the time. Both Sally Hawkins and especially Rupert Percy Jones are wonderful in this production. I was caught up with Cpt. Wentworth's cold icy look which gradually turned softer as he realised his feelings for Anne were being revived. I especially loved when they meet in the shop during the rain, when he speaks of how a man cannot overcome such a passion to such a woman, he can barely look at her! The parts were played perfectly and although it differentiates from the book on many levels I adored every second of it. I loved the 1995 version but Cpt. Wentworth was not how I imagined - I much prefer the RPJ eye candy with his dulcet dones declaring his undying love for Anne Elliot.

Mike Leigh has popped up throughout my adult life. I remember skiving university finals revision to see, "Life is Sweet', I watched "Secrets and Lies" at least three times, I saw "Career Girls" at a time when my life was falling apart and now one Saturday evening aged 40, I put on the DVD of "Happy-Go-Lucky".

Leigh is a Thomas Hardy for the suburbs. The gloom usually hangs heavily over his work, but Poppy provides light melancholy mixed with brightly-burning love. The flamenco scene shows how he has become the master of comedy, character and setting. Leigh can make a Tesco Express look romantic. I love the way he tells London stories, I'm fascinated by the roads, the rooms and the light. The dialogue is naturalistic but heightened in ... Read More:

When it aired in my country in the summer of 2002 and i loved it. it was one of the best mini series i have ever watched. i don't know if it was the subject, gay romance in 19 century England, but this is to this day still in my top 5 of most see mini series.
the plot, the script, the character and the acting are amazing. you can tell it is BBC made due to it's quality.
i highly recommend it and If you don't want to buy try and rent it from somewhere I promise it be worth it.

I rented this dvd on the strength of the reviews given alone, and very glad I did. I thought it was an absolutely fantastic adaptation and having not read the book or known anything about the story found myself captivated from start to finish. So good I have now ordered my own copy!

This programme is based on three novels written by Patrick Hamilton in the 1930s and who would go on to write the Gorse Trilogy which the Nigel Havers drama The Charmer was based on.

The three episodes involve all the three main characters but with one being the main focus of each programme. Very well acted and nice to hear colloquial accents for a change in a BBC period drama. This is one series that is definately worth watching.

This silly movie involves far too much dialogue and characters that for me seemed like cardboard cutouts as opposed to real people. The talking is nonstop and repeats the same things over and over and over again. This doesn't yield insight, it merely makes the clock continue ticking for a lengthier film. Also, the fact that two brothers raised together could have such differing viewpoints on life and guilt rang false with me.

Worst of all was I never found myself caring for either of these brothers. One seemed a ruthless enough that he thought only of himself. To feel no sympathy for either made this film more an endurance than a pleasure to watch.

In Woody Allen's film STARDUST MEMORIES he had aliens show up on Earth wanting to speak ... Read More:

DVD : The Tango Lesson [1997]
If I were to say that intelligent, European viewers will like it, and those (also depicted in the film) who like a Hollywood style film won't - that would turn off many who should or would watch. And it's too simple an analysis. The film talks to us on many levels - the dance and it's elements, reflected in the events in the film; the script that acts out the actual making of this film with parallel fiction. Rather like a spoof documentary, we are left with a sense of having watched reality, whilst knowing it's still a work of fiction that draws on fact. Like reality we are left wondering what will happen next and in the future, we are never told the back story of Sally, what brought her to this point, why is she alone, why is she in Paris. It's just like real life ... Read More:

Mike Leigh can always be counted on when it comes to presenting truthful, emotional and compelling British cinema. Over the past twenty years, he has progressed beyond the limitations of cosy teatime telly to present us with something that resonates with a sense of reality far more potent than that of our previous king of kitchen-sink despair, Ken Loach. When at his best, Leigh is a creator of honest and heartfelt, slice-of-life pictures that move effortlessly from scenes of warm humour, to moments of crippling despair; whilst always offering us a collection of characters that are viewed through the eyes of a central protagonist who, during the course of the film, undergoes a series of life shattering episodes that will eventually change their lives for better or worse. Given these ... Read More:
