My MP Ann Cryer is in this film as an extra.

One of the best childrens films ever made in the UK. Jenny Agutter recently made another version ( her third; she was in the BBC serial of the same book prior to this version) this time playing the mother. However it was not as good and lacked the charm of Lionel Jeffries version.

A must for lovers of trains and Yorkshire.

A lot more than just a rape scene

I remember seeing Gordon Williams on the South Bank show discussing his writing method. Straw dogs or siege of Trenchers farm has been his most successful book. He was a journalist and has produced 20 novels. When asked how he makes ends meet he said " I type faster" in his strong Scottish accent. I have always thought that was a good attitude towards work, do more of it. Unfortunately his fast typing has not brought him such success as Straw dogs.

It only seems to be famous for the rape scene even now over 37 years later when we have had to endue all sorts of sex scenes in films.

It is a pity that the critics only concentrate on that aspect of the film. It reminded me of The ... Read More:

As the other reviewers have remarked, neither film can be faulted, they are both good old-fashioned adventure yarns which are sadly lacking in the present day. Zero sex or violence, just lashings of ginger beer, steam engines and good old public schoolboy accents.

What lets this release down is presentation. The Railway Children boasts an anamorphic widescreen print which, generally free of dirt, is lacking the full restoration it deserves. Where are the commentaries by the original children, or documentary on how the film was made? This film cries out for supplementary material but doesn't get it.

Swallows and Amazons features a full frame print, coverd in scratches, compression artifacts and is generally very grotty looking, ... Read More:

I'd forgotten how good Yootha Joyce was. And Richard O'Sullivan and Paula Wilcox - all of them really.

Janine Duvitski (Abigail's Party, Grown Ups, One Foot in the Grave) makes an apearance in episode four in the local pub. On the credits her name was Janine Drzewicki. Was this her first TV appearance I wondered, before she realised an unpronounceable name wasn't a good idea (Jah veet ski apparently).

The girls' clothes are fascinating, some of them wouldn't look out of place today, but others would definitely only be for a seventies fancy dress party.

Good nostalgic viewing for those who like the old sitcoms.

DVD quality? There's an annoying noise, like a loose tape on a reel-to-reel, which only stops when ... Read More:

It must be remembered that the very last shots of this series remain in so many people's memories. Instead of tying up loose ends there is a last minute point of resolution that is just wonderful, tying up a series that revolutionised sit-coms in Britain, because it was one of the first to actually treat young adults as real people with real, and sometimes funny, problems. Anyone who didnt love Paula Wilcox or Richard O Sullivan at the time was out of the loop and even today we can still admire the delightful irony of their "relationship"

After a stressful day I find it so relaxing to watch an episode of MATH - I've just bought series 2 as I aim to collect them all. It is the show that I remember most fondly from my youth and it never disappoints - my young daughter even loves it. Makes you wonder how the DVD was compiled as the reels come complete with the advert break-outs (not the adverts though I'm glad to say).

Apart from a joke about giving a urine sample at the police station, that's a rip-off of a gag which had previously been used in an episode of Porridge, this is a perfect comedy treat. The idea that a man flat-sharing with women is shocking/daring is dated now, of course, but the scripts and fine acting shine through. 4 series in, Man About The House was still fresh and filled with top one-liners/punchlines. Paula Wilcox looks even more naturally gorgeous than in Series 1. And the show has loads of warmth too. Buy it. Enjoy it.

Back in the seventies, 'Man about the house' ran for six seasons. The first three of them turned out to be the best, thereafter inspiration seemed to have worn off a little.

Consequently the third series makes the pinnacle. By then its formula had been fully developped, while its experienced actors & actresses brought it to life by some enthousiastic, sparkling performances.

Have yourself carried back to your younger days once again. However, as 'Man about the house' deals with the conflicting love & marriage-morals from the 19-seventies, I feel unable to judge if and how this series will appeal to a younger generation. Times have changed indeed.
