Puccini may not be Verdi or even Andrew Lloyd Webber, but he can write a good tune. Tosca has two good ones. Everything about this staging of Tosca is off kilter. The set may look great at La Scala but on your TV you just want to rush for Panasonics geomagnetic button to straighten the set. Most singers would chop off their right hand to play Scarpia. He should make your flesh creep. The audience should want to hiss as if at a Victorian melodrama. Leo Nucci plays him as if he was a randy, faded matinee idol rather than the treacherous Chief of Police. Salvatore Licitra Is unconvincing as the romantic lead. "E lucevan le stele" however is beautifully sung and helped by the semi dark staging. ... Read More:

I found the musical side of this performance excellent and can even accept but not necessarily understand,the visual side of the production. However, what I did not like was the continual use of 'split screens' in the filming of this performance. I found it a total distraction. So basically, for me this is one to listen to but not to watch. I have ended up buying the equivalent of a CD

his DVD is a somewhat abridged presentation of an all-star operatic AIDS benefit gala from 2003 at the German Opera of Berlin (Deutsche Oper Berlin), conducted by Kent Nagano, and featuring some glittering opera singers from around the world as well as some newcomers. The festive crowd, dressed to the nines, were a very well-behaved opera crowd considering the level of the performances. Perhaps this wasn't a dyed-in-the-wool opera-going audience. Aside from some bravos for Salvatore Licitra (and not particularly well-deserved) the crowd simply clapped rather like a group of Prince Orlofskys. But the program!
