Lester Burnham's (Spacey) life is reawaken when he meets Angela Hayes (Suvari).

This 1999 Oscar winning picture is regarded as Mendes' finest and with a fine realistic styled direction it is easy to see why.

Dramas can often be ruined when a can of clichés is opened but Mendes keeps a grounded direction all the way through and uses a variety of techniques to achieve the ultimate shocking effect. From a simple but effective sweeping shot of the suburban residency to the artistic and now infamous fantasy sequences, Mendes maintains the realism in the film's context.

Alan Ball's Oscar winning script is superb. The conciseness of the character's lives is easy and relaxing to watch which, given the complexity ... Read More:

We (family) started watching this film on TV, but as it was on late, could only watch the first hour. What we saw gripped us, so I quickly rented it on DVD. We sat, wanting to find out what happened to David, the robot boy brought to `life' by a woman who thought she had lost her own son and so was able to programme David so that he looked on her as his `mummy'. Would he find refuge with the wide-boy android in the seedy underworld where droids and people mixed - or would they be caught by the droid-hating humans, who saw fit to destroy robots in terrible and sadistic ways?
This opening promised so much - and yet - we were hugely disappointed. The film after this seemed to lose itself and lurch into fairy stories: Wizard of Oz, Pinocchio ... Read More:

.....I have to give this film 5 stars - just like most other reviewers. To add further cliches - I laughed and I cried. This tale of a "dysfunctional" American family, suffering from divorce, puberty, job loss and cancer, is one of the most affecting films that I have recently seen. I don't know what the atmosphere was like on-set, but this film has been perfectly orchestrated. Fantastic script, performances, direction. It's (deep breath) almost flawlessly executed. If I had one criticism? I would have liked to have cried a little longer before the credits rolled.

DVD : Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle [1995] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
As with films like Grace Of My Heart and To Die For, what makes this worth watching is its magnetic central performance. In this case, it's Jennifer Jason Leigh as witty 1920s writer Dorothy Parker. The film follows her through her life of writing, alcoholism, torrid affairs, and soul-crushing disappointments, which is not nearly as depressing as it sounds. Director Alan Rudolph made another film, The Moderns, about this period in American life when words were valued more highly than they are in the TV- and cinema-dominated world of today, and this one makes for a great companion piece.

Leigh, an underappreciated actress, may be at her best here as Dorothy Parker. Parker is a complex character to play - a talented, charismatic, furiously intelligent ... Read More:

I agree with every word of the above review. This is a terrific Western. My only reson for joining in here is to say this : if you are unsure of James Garner as Wyatt Earp, remembering his comedy roles in 'Support your local Sherrif/Gunfighter' and, of course, the Maverick series, then don't be. This is a very different James Garner, and totally believable. That's it : go for it!
