The service comedy is a genre almost as old as cinema itself and, whether it's Charlie Chaplin or Victor McLaglen and Edmund Lowe in the trenches, Andy Griffith befuddling his sergeants, the Carry On team on the assault course or Steve Guttenberg and co at the Police Academy, has an almost immutable formula that is never, ever departed from: through mildly comic misadventure misfit(s) find themselves in the army/navy/air force/police force, are hopelessly unprepared for the harsh realities of basic training, fumble every task yet somehow come out of it all as the perfect soldier/sailor/airman/cop and prove themselves in a mildly comic baptism of fire. Private Benjamin does absolutely nothing to fix what ain't broke, contenting itself to offer ... Read More:

I have always liked this film, I cannot really say why. Probably because it's the ultimate feel good film with a happy ending. Just the right thing to watch when you want to be cheered up without having to think too much.
It's funny, maybe a bit cheesy and predictable in places but I know, I will watch it again and again. Luckily the eighties outfits are not too over the top, for me this film still watchable nowadays.
I have to agree with a previous review though, the dvd is really cheaply done, it looks as if it was made in the eighties as well!

With a strong cast, this tale unfolds from a gentle depiction of a middle class family to a poignant study of 'hidden' family values. The drama unfolds following the discovery of the true worth of a painting and sketches by their deceased father and hidden feelings start to emerge.

Angela Lansbury in particular is superb, with the film being a visual treat and a classy tribute to Rosamund Pilcher.

Arnie plays an undercover mob guy who needs to bring down some extreme scumbags while posing as one of them. It's a very silly film but good entertainment.
Recommended if you don't mind a completely lame plot.

DVD : The Spy Who Came in From the Cold [1965] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Based on the novel by the acclaimed British author John Le Carre (who gave us the excellent SMILEY'S PEOPLE and the less steller CONSTANT GARDENER) this bleak look at Cold War espionage is actually compulsive viewing. I started watching the movie late one night fully expecting to stop about halfway through yet, there I was at 1 a.m. still transfixed at the unfolding drama.
Starring Richard Burton in perhaps one of his most impressive roles and co-starring Burton's one-time girlfriend the entrancing Claire Bloom, this movie is a complex, intricately woven movie that keeps one guessing. It starts in Germany and ends in Germany with stops in England and Holland inbetween. Burton plays Alec Leamas, a former head of British intelligence in Berlin who ... Read More:
