I saw the whole short season of ITV Austen adaptations from which the three featured here were chosen and the main mystery to me is why it was that by far the the best of them - 'Persuasion', with Rupert Penry Jones and the excellent Sally Hawkins - was not included in this set.

This 'Mansfield Park' is especially poor, partly because Billie Piper - (a decent actress to be sure) is miscast. Even her looks, with her trademark bleached blonde hair and black eyebrows, are simply wrong for a lead Austen part.

For Mansfield Park, look for the greatly superior version starring Frances O' Connor as Fanny Price.

Yes, this does indeed make the other version look paltry.
I love all the performances, but Mark Strong's Mr. Knightly, and Prunella Scale's Mrs. Bates are particularly fine. A beautifully and subtly made adaptation.

with the possible exception of the pitiful 1971 entry 'DIAMONDS are FOREVER', 'DAD' is easily the most ignoble BOND entry in the entire series: certainly the least credible serving of the 21st Century.

The thrills and spills are frequent enough, but it has all been done so many times before [in infinitely more skilled hands] that this epic shambles serves no real purpose beyond forgettable 'popcorn' thrills: this total production is a monumental waste of film-making potential: at best it is a routine, also-ran entry in the BOND canon; --at worst, it is a hackneyed, cliched abomination of pseudo-cinematic confetti.

In order to inject 'new' scope into the tired [at this point] formulae, we are asked to accept as credible the concept ... Read More:

After six years in limbo as EON and the new owners of MGM/UA found themselves and the series locked in legal action at lawsuits, Timothy Dalton decided too much time had elapsed to renew his licence to kill, ushering in the Brosnan era. At the time hailed for `saving' the series (just as Dalton and Moore had been before him), the star's own bitter feud with the producers and the success of Daniel Craig in reinventing the role seem to have combined with disappointment with some of Brosnan's subsequent Bond films to the point where it's harder and harder to find any Bond fans with a good word to say about his tenure. But in 1995 GoldenEye was certainly welcomed with open arms and blockbuster business and it holds up remarkably well.

If there's a problem ... Read More:

After the disappointment of Tomorrow Never Days, it perhaps shouldn't have been too surprising that, as per the usual EON pattern of alternating good and bad Bond films, The World is Not Enough turned out rather well. It helps that it has a stronger plot this time round as well as some attempt at an element of mystery - along with For Your Eyes Only this is the only Bond where the identity of the real villain is withheld for the first half of the movie. It's also more character-based than usual, with some interesting dialogue that takes on a different dimension once you know who's on the side of the angels and who isn't. The Maguffin is an oil-based variation on Goldfinger's big scheme, but the execution is very different and rather more grounded. Brosnan has the best ... Read More:

TWINE is definitely a step up from its predecessor - more plot, more character, more realistic. Scriptwriters Purvis and Wade have brought a much needed dose of fresh thinking to the series, while never taking away from the elements we expect. Indeed, the requisite elements - chases (boat on Thames, on skis, in BMW, etc), Bond girls (two - Denise Richards and Sophie Marceau), Bond music (David Arnold really settling into the position as master of Bond music with a great score) and so on, all are well up to par. Plus a few new notes... Bond is injured for almost the entire movie, and `M' gets out into the field (and proves her mettle) - all great new twists on the formula. Indeed the villain himself comes across less like a two dimensional villain and almost more of ... Read More:

Die Another Day was surprisingly impressive first time round but doesn't hold up well to a second viewing for a number of reasons. The pre-title sequence is particularly strong, and the film is plot-led with a good premise that it explores far more effectively than License to Kill - Bond screws up, gets captured and finds his license to kill revoked and has to go it alone. But to many wrong choices are made in the casting of those both in front of and behind the cameras to do it full justice.

Brosnan is certainly a major problem here, getting lazier in the role far sooner than his predecessors. He takes too much for granted and doesn't seem to be putting much effort into it in the assumption that he's got it down pat, when in reality he's starting to go to seed - certainly ... Read More:

James Bond (Brosnan) is sent on a mission to protect the daughter of recently deceased Robert King and is soon finding clues to who was behind his murder.

After two impressive enthusiastic performances as Bond in Goldeneye and Tomorrow Never Dies, Pierce Brosnan added more drama to the character in this tense if slightly over-informed thriller.

Brosnan again cements the character to the ground with some delicious acting worthy of praise with cheeky puns and great onscreen relationships. The adding of the drama was a necessity to the character to create a more human feeling over that superhero cover he previously conveyed. The dramatic reflection on the plot is executed well by Brosnan and has only been bettered by Craig's recent reprisal of the British agent.
