Persuasion is my favourite book and this adaptation does it justice. The tone of the film matches the tone of the book: whistful. Anne is beautifully portrayed by Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds is wonderful as the charismatic Captain Wentworth. It's far subtler than the more recent ITV adaptation, and because of that all the more beautiful. Scenes in this film would melt the hardest of hearts, yet it is still funny. The perfect comfort film.

My husband bought this film/Tv Series and I was dreading some really cheesey fantasy film but no, instead what I saw was a well written, well acted, beautifully directed film with great special effects and hardly an ounce of cheese! I read the Norse myths about ten years ago and loved them, and this film is very much in that vein. Personally I think this film will become one of my top ten favourites. I didn't get bored once or find myself clock watching. I just wonder I'd never heard of it before. If heroic sagas are your cup of tea you won't be dissapointed. Buy it, it's a great film and one I'm sure you'll keep in your collection forever.

This is a series of six programmes, each of 48 minutes in length. A very thorough investigation into the root causes of the rise of the Nazi party that makes amazing viewing. Very few of those involved that are interviewed seem to show any remorse and the content is quite disturbing. One aspect of the series that I found disappointing was the continual use of sub-titles when the interviews were in a foreign language. This means that you have to watch the screen at all times and not just listen to the programme. On the Thames TV Series 'The World at War' they dubbed the interviews with English translations and this was much easier to follow. Hence only 4 stars from me. Having watched this photoplay of one of the great, yet little known, people of history, I was left to wonder if the film could have been any better. Having watched it again a dozen times, each time more critically, I am left to answer unequivocally "no". The plot, the casting, the effects, the script, the production; everything. It's "all good." Set in two worlds, "Longitude" sets out to depict the lives of two men: the first is John Harrison, maker of the first correct timepiece for use at sea, struggling with the Board of Longitude re the recognition of his work. This has got to be one of the best movies I have ever watched, but is certainly a movie that requires and deserves to be watched by those who apreciate the fantastic story and acting. If you are looking for action movies don't look here, but if you like movies that are moving and deeply emotional then this might be a movie for you. I cried buckets at the end without the movie being predictable or "soppy" and best of all...it tells the story of real people and makes one think of those poor real characters. All acting was highly professional and to the highest standard in my oppinion, but Pryce was second to none. Highly recomended if you like myself like beautiful but deep movies.

I think the title of this review sum up my opinion. The complexity of the storyline was lost in this adaptation. The facts and details that were changed, removed the edge that this novel had originally. However, God bless Brian Cox who brought talent to the uninspiring cast. His performance alone envoked an emotional reaction out of me.
