This is not a production of 'Ariadne auf Naxos' that I could recommend to anyone coming to this delicious Richard Strauss opera for the first time. Musically it is reasonably good, but the updating is utterly confusing for anyone who isn't already quite familiar with the work. I would recommend for the first-timer either the Met/Levine/Norman/Battle/Troyanos DVD or the classic Salzburg/Böhm/Grist/Jurinac version. This is, I must say, the first production of Ariadne in which I much preferred the Prolog to the Opera proper. It is played entirely in front of the curtain and thus is quite minimalist. But the movements of the principal players and in particular the portrayal of The Composer (by mezzo Michelle Breedt) are engaging. ... Read More:

I cannot understand the previous review. Yes the production is ... new ... strange ..and certainly makes you think. It is not a 'pretty' production that so many people expect but it is all about bringing something new to a well loved opera that is perhaps the favourite of so many But Harnoncourt is perhaps arguably one of the greatest exponents of Mozart and his NEW interpretation of the music is sublime. I have 14 different interpretations on DVD of this opera and hitherto perhaps the Covent Garden has been my favourite. But this puts the emphasis on the interpretation of the music that is beyond genius ... it is inspirational. You will hear every aria and chorus afresh with a divine ... Read More:

Along the years, there's been some argument in the musical press whether Busoni was a great composer or if he rather was, as Richard Strauss's own pun on himself, a first class second rate one.
