This is not the story of the US war of independence, nor is this the story of the founding fathers. This really is the story of John Adams the second president of the United States.

The mini series goes to great lengths to show the events leading up to 1776 as not just one way. Indeed it's refreshing to show such an even handed account of the causes of the war of revolution. This is underlined by Adams at first despising and then defending a troop of British Red Coats for firing into a crowd of civilians.

The war of independence is of course the backdrop for most of the series and yet very little of it is shown, there is a standout scene where Adams is in a brief sea battle but this is largely a costume drama more in ... Read More:

I love this film, it shouldn't really be compared to the original as it is it's own film and should be considered in that respect.
The first scenes of zombie action are amazing, they are quite shocking and just consider how you would react to witnessing this sort of thing going on!
I never get tired of watching this film and after seeing it several times on tv I finally got around to buying the dvd and was impressed with the extras included, if you are a fan there is plenty on there to keep things interesting.

It's a pity that others in the series such as Land of the Dead were such a terrible disappointment!

This is an excellent piece for those who want to see their sagas and tales made flesh. Set in rather grimmer terrain than Geatland it has an excellent sense of broken terrain, mist and the sea. The characters are straight out of a saga yet firmly rooted in a real economic and social system; this is not Kirk Douglas running along the oars. The "look" is fantastic from the short legged ponies to the Sutton Hoo helmets. Gerard Butler manages to rise above his signature "This is Sparta" persona to be the hero and sword-brother. Stellan Skarsgård is an excellent decaying king whose cruelty (and mercy) start the whole tale.

If the world Beowulf inhabits has the tang of reality (the fisherman is particularly good) the fantastic is also well-served. ... Read More:

This film tells the story of a 23 year old woman, who lives with her partner and two young children in a trailer in her mother's back yard. Needless to say, they are a very poor family, and she spends her nights working as a cleaner to help put food on the table.

When she is diagnosed with cancer and given two months to live, she draws up a list of things to do before she dies. At this point, the film looks like it will simply be a version of the bucket list. But not so. After drawing up the list, she decides she will keep her illness a secret. She then sets out to do the items on her list, from sleeping with other men to see what its like, to attempting to set her soon to be bereaved husband up with a pretty female friend of hers.

'Munchausen' is a truly great film. It's Terry Gilliam's finest film (debatable) and certainly - in terms of production - the most controversial.

The film - for those unfamiliar - tells the tall tale of the Baron attempting to save a beseiged city from the Turkish army and end a war he claims responsibility for. In order to do so, the aged Baron must quest to find his faithful servants whilst accompanied by Sally Salt - the child protagonist and main focus of the movie.

For 2 hours you are treated to a spectacularly lavish fantasy world from a trip to the moon in a balloon made of knickers, to the pit of a smouldering volcano, the belly of a whale and then to an amazing final battle in which everything, but death, can be finally conquered.

An excellent film from the inimitable Bruce LaBruce, released by PPR, whose ever-expanding pedigree stable also includes other highly recommended films such as 'Krampack', 'Summer Storm', 'Close to Leo', 'Circuit' and 'You'll Get Over It'.

'Sugar' is a self-consciously poignant film, made more so by the fact that one of the two main actors, the highly-talented Andre Noble, died in an accident not long after the film was made. The essence of the plot is that Cliff (Andre Noble) goes onto the streets of Toronto to celebrate his 18th birthday, and meets street-wise hustler Butch (Brendan Fehr). Cliff is instantly captivated by the enigmatic and ostensibly self-assured Butch, and gets drawn into a downward spiral of hustling and the dark underbelly of the Toronto ... Read More:

I remember watching this film as a child and being terrified and excited at the same time. If I wasn't absolutly certain a might actually have struggled to decide whether I'd dreamt the whole expeariance. Such is the nature of Baron Munchausen, It is a poetic and whimsical patchwork of frensied childhood dreams and nightmares, held together with fairy tale logic. Gilliam is the master of childlike imaginings mixing allagory, myths and his own pythonesc humour into and episodic adventure full of colourful characters, magical scenery and impossible special effects that no one these days would attempt without cgi.
There are plenty of special features on this disc which include an in-depth documentary on the making of the film and an audio commentary with Gilliam. The transfer ... Read More:

Love it or loathe it, this movie is essentially a one line gag, although it will probably take you 93 minutes to get the joke. Although it's about a new totally immersive virtual reality game [eXistenZ], the plot has nothing in common with films like 'The Matrix' - there's no alien 'war of the worlds' threat or suchlike. In fact this film has more in common with having hot tea and crumpets inside Star Trek's Holodeck with the safety protocols off. Besides eXistenZ is firmly set in our world and time, although it probably does represent a glimpse of the Playstation-8 touchie/feelie gaming future. Like 'Sixth Sense', the films power is totally dependent on not knowing what happens at the end (and the middle for that matter). I don't see how anyone could criticise the final scenes - that's ... This feature should be filed under that elusive category `One of those really good films you have never heard of'. The story is beautifully handled and filmed by Atom Egoyam and is perhaps his best movie to date. The story unfolds at a gentle pace in interconnecting threads and flashbacks and centres around a solid performance from Ian Holm as the troubled lawyer ambulance chasing in a community that has suffered a tragic communal accident whilst battling demons with his own personal tragedy (a hopeless relationship with his drug addicted daughter). Sarah Polley also features strongly in another troubled father/daughter relationship and survivor of the accident who throughout the film narrates the tale of the Pied Piper as a flashback babysitter which is cleverly intertwined with the events ...
