DVD : The Derby Stallion [2005] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
15-year old Patrick (Zac Efron) is new in town and has problems: He can't seem to please his jock father (William R. Moses), and he runs afoul of Randy, the town bully, when both boys are attracted to the same pretty girl. Patrick's only friend is one-time horse trainer and long-time alcoholic, Houston Jones (Bill Cobbs), who sees something special in Patrick. Houston gives the boy a horse and trains him to ride in the State Steeplechase Cup race, but Randy, the reigning champ, decides to make Patrick's life miserable.

This low-budget but pleasant 2005 family film was never shown in cinemas, but has been released on DVD following Zac Efron's mega-successes in "High School Musical" and "Hairspray." There's no denying Efron's Tiger ... Read More:

Quite pointless really, clearly what they put on the cover is to entice wider audience from shall we say, "adult" category, so they will be disappointed as equally those expecting insightful drama what with Auteuil as a main cast. Interesting from the observation point of view but not a cinematic success

DVD : Ode To Freedom - The Berlin Celebration Concert [1989]
The Berlin Wall fell on November 9, 1989. On Christmas Day 1989, only six weeks later, due to the organizational skills of Leonard Bernstein (and others) an historic concert of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony was given in the Schauspielhaus in the former East Berlin with instrumentalists and singers from a number of different countries. These included orchestra members from the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Orchestra of the Kirov Theater of Leningrad, the London Symphony, the New York Philharmonic and the Orchestre de Paris. The choruses were those of Bavarian and Berlin Radio as well as, unusually, the Children's Choir of the Philharmonie Dresden. Soloists were June Anderson (soprano, American), Sarah Walker (mezzo, British), ... Read More:

DVD : A Man of Flowers [1983] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
After the mainstream success of his 1982 Lonely Hearts, Paul Cox went arthouse for this film, a meditation on art, religion, sex and death. Norman Kaye plays a vampire-like recluse, who dresses like a priest and is described as "something the world has lost". Independently wealthy, he collects beautiful things and has a flower fetish. This fetish extends to regular visits by Alyson Best, whom he calls"his little flower" and who strips for his pleasure. Best is also associated with Chris Hayward, a manipulative abstract painter. The scenario is credited to Cox, with dialogue by Bob Ellis, who appears in an amusing scene as Kaye's South African-accented anaylst. The treatment tries to legitimise Kaye by demonstrating that everyone else ... Read More:

This is a fantastic movie based on an equally good Peter Carey novel about 80s excess and the difficulties of actually "being good" when all around is hell-like.

Harry Joy comes back from death to see the world as it really is - full of horror and horrors. Teriffic performances all round and I guarantee that the guys will wish they had a Honey Barbera of their own.

Get this out on DVD a.s.a.p.!!!!

9.Handel: Julius Caesar -- ENO [1984] starring: Janet Baker, Valerie Masterson, Sarah Walker, Della Jones, James Bowman

DVD : Handel: Julius Caesar -- ENO [1984]
In 1979, this production totally redefined Handel's Julius Caesar for the London audience. Revivals in 1981 and 1983 (the latter with Christopher Robson replacing Janet Baker as Caesar) reinforced the point, and this 1984 studio recording did much to consolidate John Copley's Handel style as a point of reference for a larger audience: golden scenery and big frocks allied to a sensitive delineation of character.

It is not a 20th Century re-interpretation such as Nicholas Hytner's Xerxes or David Alden's Ariodante, but it is a golden achievemt with some wonderful singing and acting from a superb cast inspired by Sir Charles Mackerras' conducting to feats of vocal virtuosity (not just in terms of bravura but also of passionate inward expression).

DVD : The Watermelon Woman [1996] (NTSC)
Whilst there's nothing particularly wrong with "The Watermelon Woman" there's nothing to grab hold of and say "Yes, this makes the film great." It's an insipid and slow moving account of life in a black lesbian community in Philadelphia in the 1990s. The main character and film producer Cheryl Dunye embarks on a mission to discover more about a fictional black actor from the early 20th century known as The Watermelon Woman. Her research takes her to meet a variety of people and face a range of attitudes when she discovers that the actor was a lesbian rumoured to have been having an affair with the white director of some of her movies. Although some of the themes raised in this film are thought provoking (for example that many black actors were not credited in films ... Read More:
