"The Time Machine" remains a timeless film although the special effects in this 50 year old film are now somewhat dated. Rod Taylor plays the time traveller who travels forward in time by tens of thousands of years to find humanity divided into two; living on the Earth's surface are the Eloi, a passive, stupid but beautiful people who are preyed upon by the subterranean cannibalistic Morlocks. The hideous Morlocks do all the work while the Eloi live lives of idle leisure.Clearly the film is making inferences about the class system on Earth in the current age, perhaps taking things to extremes to make a point. When I was younger I found the scenes where Taylor fought the Morlocks in their cave terrifying , but the passage of time has dimmed their ... DVD : The Jungle Book (Disney) (1967) [1968]
In one of Walt Disney's classics, Bagheera the panther offers to take Mowgli, a young boy, to the man village before the evil tiger Shere Khan gets to him.

This family adventure is a classic, made so by a beautiful sentimental plot about human emotions, including loyalty, sensitivity and most importantly love. And these human emotions are decoded through the animals of the jungle.

With the enchanting and fun loving actions of Baloo the bear and the honest and hard actions of Bagheera, do audiences get that true feel of the human spirit, and the facts of life, to have fun, but to face the truth as well, which is also reflected in some of the most catchy and enjoyable songs ever created for a Disney picture.

We had this on video when I was a child and I watched it so many times that the tape got worn out and I couldn't anymore. I was heartbroken! and also very glad to see it now available on DVD!

I'm surprised no-one's mentioned Archimedes yet - he and Merlin vie for best character in my opinion. A fluffy, pompous, talking owl! Quote:
'Archimedes - you saved my life!'
*looks grumpy* 'Pf pf pf pf pf, I was going to eat you.'

DVD : Tales of Terror/Twice Told Tales [1962] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
The first film is a Roger Corman / Poe classic featuring three tales, all staring Vincent Price and other great veteran actors such as Basil Rathbone and Peter Lorre. The first story here involves a tormented Price who keeps his dead wife upstairs who soon enough returns to life and goes on a rampage! The second story is my personal favourite Corman/Price effort - called The Black Cat. Here the cast from 'The Comedy of Terror' are re-united and Peter Lorre plays (perhaps too believably) a bumbling wineo, who runs into Price at a wine tasting contest. Soon enough Price becomes Lorre's new best friend and is making sure he has plenty of booze money - but only so he can entertain his wife while Lorre is away at the pub all night ! Lorre finds out, returns home and ... Read More:

Is this the first spaghetti western? Not literally, of course. The film was made in the USA, with an American cast and director. But this rococo masterpiece, a triumph of quirkiness over a hackneyed story, looks forward in many ways to the excesses and mannerisms of Leone and Corbucci. We have the bizarre weaponry: a whaling harpoon is flourished in the final showdown. There is the cartoon like bad man, self-consciously acting out a role that the code of the west demands he plays. We have the unusual music: instead of the lush, sub-symphonic orchestral scoring that dominates so many westerns, there is a jaunty, expressive folk theme that could have come from Morricone on a off-day. Hayden's strange 'Swedish' accent (actually more like the chef from the Muppet show) makes ... Read More:

DVD : Secret Agent [1936]
Few films in the Hitchcock cannon have less things to reccommend about themselves than this.

Madeleine Carroll and Peter Lorre's performances are not a patch on their earlier Hitchcock appearences (The 39 Steps and The Man Who Knew Too Much respectively), John Gielgud, attracted to the role on Hitchock's insistence that the Edgar Brodie/Richard Ashenden was a modern-day Hamlet grew to hate his character and, perhaps quite rightly, felt that the villains in the piece were portrayed with more vigour.

There are moments that will please Hitchcock fans, not least the eerie scene in the Church, but on most levels this film is a huge let down. It features unsympathetic characters, an unbalanced plot and wastes the talent of nearly all concerned.
