DVD : Great Expectations [1999]
This edition is technically not great. The DVD mastering is quite awful and is very grainy indeed. However....

This is so good. Having admired David Lean's rather compressed version of Dickens' superb novel for many years and having endured the complete annihilation of the said novel in the abhorrent farrago starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Ethan Hawke, it is an absolute joy to witness the sheer quality of realisation in this production. It vastly outclasses the other productions on every level although the Lean has great nostalgic charm and appeal. Relatively faithful to the novel, this is profoundly engaging. The acting is superb.Charlotte Rampling inhabits the character of Miss Havisham at a stellar level, evoking a sympathetic response ... Read More:

DVD : Sword Of Honour [2001]
Any attempt to condense the Sword of Honour trilogy into one lengthy film (although I think it was shown originally as a two-parter?) was bound to be flawed.
And it is. The books themselves start off more comic in tone (Men at Arms) and become more tragic and cynical during Officers and Gentlemen and Unconditional Surrender. This probably reflects Waughs own state of mind which became increasingly bitter as his health deteriorated (see Selina Hastings' excellent biography)
However the film never quite knows where it is and tries to be funny and tragic at the same time (not easy) and fails in general.
It must be said that Daniel Craig does a good job, but Trimmer and Ritchie-Hook in particular are miscast. The portrayal of Apthorpe was ... Read More:

Part of me very much wants to give this five stars, just because it's Fry and Laurie, but I'll try and be fair.

Following the fantastic first series, the second is very funny, but doesn't quite seem to regain its former heights. The show feels somewhat pedestrian as there is a much greater reliance on recurring characters (Tony and Control, Dammit, etc) and a fair amount of time is taken up by pseudo-sketches where Fry and Laurie as "Fry and Laurie" (normally at the start and close of the show) satirise Richard and Judy-type shows with polls, responses to viewers' letters and what have you. These bits are normally more gently amusing, with entertaining obeservations and satire on the genre, than full blown comedy. As a result (combined with the ever excellent ... Read More:

DVD : Poirot - Agatha Christie's Poirot - The Murder Of Roger Ackroyd [2000]
Hercule Poirot is one of the most famous detectives in literary history. Yet, strangely, except for his portrayal by Albert Finney in the star-studded movie version of "Murder on the Orient Express," for a long time, there did not seem to be an actor who could convincingly bring to life the clever, dignified little Belgian with his unmistakable egg-shaped head, always perched a little on one side, his stiff, military, slightly upward-twisted moustache, and his excessively neat attire, which had reached the point that "a speck of dust would have caused him more pain than a bullet," as Agatha Christie introduced him through his friend Captain Hastings's voice in their and her own very first adventure, "The Mysterious Affair at Styles" (1920). But leave it to British TV to finally ... Read More:
