DVD : The Lighthorsemen [1987] (REGION 2) (PAL) [Dutch Import] [1988]

The Lighthorseman was a film I hated when I saw it years ago, but which I was overly harsh about. It's not a great film by a long shot, but it is extremely well directed by Simon Wincer in the days when he was the go-to guy for anything with horses, extremely well edited and quite beautifully photographed by Dean Semler in vivid colour. Retelling the Australian Light Horse's famous charge on Beersheba in WW1, the subject of the earlier and generally superior propaganda picture 40,000 Horsemen, it desperately wants to be another Gallipoli, but despite lavish production values is let down by a script that covers the history well enough but doesn't give us particularly well-drawn characters to care about - the mates the film focuses on may well ... Superb production of the classic D.H.Lawrence novel. Sylvia Kristel smoulders in the role, and, as with the Emmanuelle films, she brings a sophisticated class, and sensual intensity to the sexual core of the storyline. Beautiful countryside, a strong cast, rich and lush settings, and burning passion !! The stunning Sylvia Kristel was the perfect choice for the role in this excellent film, which can be enjoyed on many levels.

Pretty much exactly what you'd expect from Hammer.
(One of Bill Hobbs' finest acting moments?)

'Straight On Till Morning' is about a naive girl from Liverpool who writes fairy stories and moves to London in the hope of finding her handsome prince and having a baby (why she bothered moving to London when I'm sure that some of the Liverpudlians would have obliged is another matter).

Anyway, after being exposed as a wallflower and a bit wet behind the ears amongst the London in-crowd she finally does find her prince - a suave bachelor with a flash car and a large mews house. The only problem is that he's also a homicidal maniac and a bit too handy with a stanley knife that he keeps (strategically) on his bedside table.

I do enjoy the nostalgia of the old Hammer films and Katya Wyeth certainly lights up this 92 minute ... Read More:

DVD : Hawk The Slayer [1980]
I remember this film from when I was a kid. IT IS GENIUS!!!!!

The all time great Bernard Breslaw as the giant/barbarian and the perpetually evil Jack Palance as the evil VOLTAN, Hawk's older brother... with a moody elf called CROW. There is even a scene where the magic special effect is silly string. Can you really ask for more from an early 80s sci-fi film? There is the standard witty banter between characters and the evil is the most evil of evil.

This film is a must for those who grew up in the 80s and those who need to know what little we had to get us through.

I also recommend KRULL, FLASH GORDON & LABYRINTH

Terence Fisher's last film for Hammer (ever?) sees him re-united with the excellent Peter Cushing, and doing what he does best. Creating a dark, alien world with lush, watery colours, and using fluid camera tracking shots to tell a simple, gory, fairy-tale.
Fisher's influence is omnipresent in today's cinema. I saw `Pan's Labyrinth' recently and had to smile at del Toro's gentle homage, his camera moving smoothly, yet malevolently through the forest trees,(on the edge of the soldiers camp) just as Fishers so often did. And am I alone in thinking that the asylum set here at FATMFH, (though making `Cell Block H's' look like `Lord of the Rings' in terms of budget,) bears more than a passing resemblance to the long-shot interiors of the good ... DVD : The Picture of Dorian Gray [1974] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
this dvd is part of "the dan curtis macabre collection" when you first start to watch this ,it looks like a cheap sunday night play & that
repetetive scene of the horse & carriage arriving & departing gray's residence gets a bit tiresome.but the acting is top notch & the characters
are believable as the painting grows old for all gray's sins.
i would like to see a new production made in 2008 on a big budget!
