DVD : Saw Quadrilogy [2004]

Claustrophobic, disturbing and uncomfortable these words adequately describe Saw. As a terminal cancer patient John "Jigsaw" Kramer subjects people who he sees as unappreciative of life, of dubious morality or to just teach a lesson; to tests in the form of a deadly game. Torturous devices are attached to their body and "Billy" the puppet gives instructions of how to get out of their situation. From drug addicts, to photographers and even a rapist are subjected to these macabre devices

Saw does induce questions of morality, especially the scene in Saw IV involving the proprietor of a hotel who is exposed as a rapist who videotapes his exploits. Does this man deserve to live or does he deserve a punishment that is as depraved as ... Read More:

The inventiveness is gone in this film, and while there's plenty of gore it doesn't have the ingenuity that made the first two films so effective. It's just about worth seeing but nothing great.

SAW is an ingenious take on the slasher movie franchise. Mixing satisfying puzzle elements with touches of Grand Guignol and inventive camera techniques this movie keeps the viewer entertained from start to finish. And the ending, although highly unlikely given the circumstances, is quite rewarding. Preposterous but great fun.

The Jigsaw Killer is up to his shenanigans again, with more of his grimly fiendish puzzles and surprises in this competent sequel. Compared to the original, however, it falls a little short on ingenuity. It still packs a gruesome punch though, with more gore and desperate cruelty than its predecessor. There's a twist in its tail too that will surprise all but the most prescient viewers (it does come somewhat out of the blue).

It's a little difficult to see where they can go from here though. I've yet to watch the third, fourth, fifth, and so on, instalments but I suspect disappointment lies ahead in the form of a severely flogged dead horse. But for now both SAW I and II can be recommended for those who enjoy an inventive angle to ... Read More:

This box set is an excellent buy for anyone who has seen and enjoyed the saw films, or like me, had seen the first three, but not the fourth and didn't own any of them.

They are all very well written and produced, each sharing its own twisting plot involving the charactors; which often refers to the previous installments in the sequels. This makes it essential really that you need to see them from the beginning to get the full gist of what's going on and truly get the most out of the storyline.

There's not much to say about the plot without giving too much away. The main character has a terminal illness and decides to spend the rest of his days testing the will of other humans; needless to say this involves a series of disturbing ... Read More:

Saw 3 is, in my opinion the best entry (to date) in the Saw series. This film ties up alot of the loose ends left from the first two Saw films. This dvd is the "directors cut" and features footage not seen in the cinema or the previous "extreme edition". The new scenes include Jigsaw making a tape and coating it in wax (leading to Saw 4) and lynn attempting to escape and fighting with Amanda, the notorious rack scene is also longer. This leads to my one complaint with the dvd releases - firstly an "extreme edition" is released and then a longer "directors cut" is released. Why not issue both versions in a double disk set ? It would avoid people having to decide whether to upgrade to the longer version. The special features are up to the usual high standard and ... Read More:

Fantastic film.
In all ways.
Obviously there was a little bit of characterisation missed out on, but that just added to the fact that it doesnt matter who you are, if you do not appreciate your life, you are at risk.

This is a great sequel to SAW and generated a lot more sequels (the fifth of which is opening this week).

Anyone who enjoyed SAW will enjoy this sequel. Lot's of plot twists (with the biggest coming in the end!), bloody traps always involving needles or blades... You name it. It's there.

This special edition is particularly loaded with extras and you should get yours now.
