The Shining [1980]
An ugly, hard-to-stomach horror movie, from Stanley Kubrick, whose sense of taste and feeling for his character have somewhat dulled. His source: Stephen's King's novel, was a horrifing tale, too, but King evokes a sence of concern for his characters which has totally eluded Kubrick's work here. Jack Nicholson is suitably menancing but Shelly Duvall is almost ludricrously weak.

I always enjoyed Stephen Kings Novels especially The Shining but the film that is celebrated as the best horror movie is not as good as it could have been.Had Copolla spent more attention to some of the creepier elements of the book ie the topiary animals rather than making Shelley Duvall do a certain scene 20 or so times he could have included so many more images in this film.Jack Nicholsons character goes way over the top and the classic bathroom scene is about the only terrifying scene. After injuring his foot the image of him being a sort of hobgoblin weilding a axe chasing his son didn't cut it for me and the ending was just awful.THe book will always remain a classic but the film could have been so much better.

Interesting film. Complex, if slightly annoying characters who tend to either argue, produce witty anecdotes or whine about how the sex in their relationship is non exsistant. Woody Allen gets on my nerves but I knew this was a film I had to watch as I slowly worked my way through the latest 'hundred greatest films' list, put together no doubt by a group of people who all know each other. I'm not sure why this is on the list but there are some comic moments and yes, although aggrivating, Woody Allen is strangly loveable by the end of the film, although his attitude to women is weirdly uncomfortable and stifling to watch, moving from break up to break up to marriage proposals within an hour and a half. One to watch, but I'm sure his genius is more widely ... Read More:

We all know it's a great film so instead of me going on about that or how average the cover looks(!), I'll talk about what you're spending the extra £'s on, the Blu Ray conversion.... There have been a number of older films that have been put on to Blu Ray which, simply, have been very poor (see my review on Bullitt (another Warner title FYI)). The point of Blu Ray should be to showcase the very best in picture and audio quality that is currently available. Thankfully, this title has converted very well. The picture quality is exceptional, it makes a 28yr old film look very recent. Jack has never looked so maniacal! And again, the audio quality just brings a whole new experience to the film, adding an even darker edge than you were previously aware of.

Steve Martin (The man with two brains) stars as fire chief Charlie Bales, a man with a big nose. This unusual feature makes him believe he will be able to be with a girl he has just met, the beautiful Roxanne.

Martin gives a good performance as the insecure but happy fire chief. His best moment is the famous bar scene where he is challenged to think of 20 insults regarding his big nose, which is the most interesting point of the film.

The over sized nose is the big talking point of the town and the use of it was quite interesting as it brought out a touching subject regarding appearance and what other people though of it. As the film is a comedy it is the focus on pretty much all of the jokes and uses it well, with Martin's comedy experience ... Read More:

This realisation by the Disney Company of an old animated favourite didn't do well at the box office. As a previous reviewer has noted, however, the film repays subsequent viewing with a wealth of detail that might well be missed the first time.

Disney have always enjoyed inserting 'homages' to their previous work but Popeye itself is referenced by their immensely successful Pirates Of The Caribbean - The Curse Of The Black Pearl - 1 disc [2003]. Robin Williams' initial appearance in the film is as Popeye in a small boat, which barely makes it to the pier. Upon climbing on to the pier, he's charged a mooring fee - the same fee as Sparrow is charged on an almost identical first appearance in POTC.

That apart, Popeye is well worth seeing, ... Read More:

We rented this film because we were so impressed by many of its good reviews. However, we felt let down when we saw it. Much of the filming was done in very poor light (presumably deliberately), and even when the sun shone outside, it seemed that the camera preferrred to stay in the shadows. Despiute the fact that some reviewers loved this film, we found its pace achingly slow, focussing upon a lead character with whom we had no empathy. After half an hour or so we were so bored we abandoned watching this film.

"You who must leave everything that you cannot control, it begins with your family but soon it comes down to your soul".. and so Leonard Cohen's most haunting lines and ambigously beautiful melodies flow into this greatest of Altman movies.

This is a borderland America, a mystic new-born America, a brutal and tragic land in which life is cheap and full of strife.

The typical Altman charm is here, the melee of life spills from the screen, voices of extras treated with the same reverence as those of our heroes, Beatty and Christie.

These two stars are in their prime and portray a delicious frisson of romance. Beatty is full of lucky bravado, but retains a steadfast honour in love and as his life becomes at risk. Christie is at her cheekiest, cajoling ... Read More:

DVD : Nashville [1975] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Nashville has the ultimate template of a multi-functional cast, which be compared to more recent offerings, like The Player, with the various characters as if they are constantly spilling out of the studio, Short Cuts and you could also consider Gosford Park, with the servants, housemaids, butlers, residents of the household and certain percuile guests whom visit.

Featuring a load of little known talents including some well know supporting partners, Nashville could be considered to be the jewel of the whole of Tennessee!

Nashville follows twelve hopeful country singers as they try to spread their talent (or what they have of it) by catchy one-liners, being patronic about their home; having a band to support them; singing songs close to their dear hearts and having some ... Read More:
