Verdi's Aida comes thrillingly to life in this splendid production from the Metropolitan Opera. Aprile Millo is in excellent voice in the title role and sings with great musicality throughout. Indeed this sense of musical values being the most important is reflected in the fine performances of the rest of this all star cast most notably Placido Domingo and Dolora Zajick as Radames and Amneris respectively. The production is old fashioned but attractive and the physical acting is rudimentary but the vocal acting gets prizes all round.

This was a favourite performance for me on video and is now excellently transferred onto DVD (sub titles optional). First rate.

I am afraid I agree with Mel C. I came to this video expecting great things from Milnes, whom I much admire, only to be gravely disappointed and unmoved. Kabaivanska is adequte, but no more than that: on balance I prefer Behrens (and I don't much like her in the role!) Domingo, as always, as Cavardossi, does a great job and the settings and decent matching of soundtrack to film do add to the overall effect. But the ideal modern 'Tosca' has yet to come: perhaps I have been spoiled by Callas/Gobbi/Pretre.

I have to say that Il Trovatore is one of my favourite Verdi Opera's, with a great mix of drama and suspense, twinned with the most unlikely of story lines! There are ample opportunities for the musicians and artists to shine, and some did in this production!
In particular, Dolora Zajick, much the best actor on the stage, gave a passionate and inspired performance as Azucena. She has a wonderfully resilient voice, and carried the role off superbly. I also enjoyed Sherrill Milnes' performance as the "evil" Count Luna. Milnes wouldn't be out of place as the baddy in one of those silent films twiddling his moustach! I found his powerful Baritone extremely convincing.

Pavarotti's voice is as agreeable as ever, but as usual his acting ... Read More:

DVD : Il Trovatore
Though this 1988 Metropolitan Opera performance is far from perfect, it still has a lot to offer the viewer/listener. One of the drawbacks is that Il Trovatore is a "night" opera, where all the drama seems to happen from dusk to dawn; this production takes it literally, and it is very dimly lit. It is saved by its beautiful silvery costumes, which reflect the minimal lighting, so at least you can see where the people are in the midst of the black stage.

The cast:
Luciano Pavarotti is in fine fettle, with a virile, powerful interpretation of the glorious "Ah ! si, ben mio coll'essere", and a bit better than usual acting performances.
Sherrill Milnes is vocally past his prime here, but is a great stage presence, and does an excellent, ... Read More:

DVD : Verdi: Ernani [1983] (NTSC)
This is early 'bel canto' Verdi. Musically not yet his best but still pretty good.
The DVD is from a 1983 recording, although it looked older, the picture was rather dim and the colours faded. The advantage is that Pavarotti was then not so overweight and was able to move freely around the stage.
The 4 principals were all fine singers with Ruggero Raimondi for me getting the top honours.
The production treated this very much as 'bel canto' opera i.e. a showcase for the singers with the story and the drama a poor second. This was made worse by the audience who seemed to be in a mood to applaud anything and everything. Some of the singing was very fine and deserved the applause but every scene change (including some quite minor ones) ... Read More:
