The apartment is one of the essential Christmas movies along with the other black and white classics - It's a wonderful life, Miracle on 34th Street, Some like it hot and Scrooge. It's a fantastic film for a cold, dark December night and seems to work best at that time of year, just like The odd couple or Rear window work best in summer.

I first watched this film on its cinema release in the U.K. I loved it then and still do today. My tape version has seen better days so I splashed out on the dvd and I am not sorry. (dvd`s in Africa are very expensive compared to the U.K.)Shirley MacLaine is superb and there could not have been a better choice to take the lead role. Supporting actors Stubby Kay, Ricardo Montalban and Sammy Davis Jnr add to the quality of the production and Chita Rivera is brilliant. The dvd offers an alternate ending but I must confess that I have never watched it.

'Being There' is a film Peter Sellers made right at the end of his career. Whatever you make of this troubled man's life, I think you will agree that the role he plays here, of Chance the gardener, represents a brave exit from the glitzy world of movies. Indeed, Being There could be seen as a satire on the celebrity industry of which Peter Sellers was so much a part.

Chance is a man who has never grown up. Employed for the whole of his existence by a rich man in Washington who has just died, Chance's life has been dominated by gardening, television and little else. His employer's huge house, a home that Chance has never left for a moment, is being sold, and Chance finds himself out on the street, and hopelessly ill-equipped for this ... Read More:

A great film. Not a cryer normally I was wet-eyed at the end of this one. The film concerns the relationship between two sisters; the wayward pretty one and the older sister/clever lawyer, that breaks down allowing each of them to develop that part of their character normally fulfilled by the other one. The lawyer finds a man and the wayward one takes on responsibility. In doing so they also find the missing bits of their family and themselves. As soon as it finished I wanted to watch it again. Highly recommended. Especially good for anyone who ever envied their siblings - you will get this film like no-one else.

I bought this set for my husband who is a huge fan. One of the titles - Breezy does not have Clint in it, it was directed by him which I was unaware of at the time I bought it.

I have watched this film many, many times over the years and it's still as great as the first time I watched it. A superstar cast brings with it quality acting and a superb script. Don't think I've ever watched it without crying, so if you're a Steel Magnolias virgin, or coming back to it for a repeat viewing - be sure to have the tissues at the ready....
It also has one of my all-time favourite quotes, which is something I live by...
"I'd rather have one moment of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special" - simply beautiful!

Obviously if you like your no-brainer action car-chase movies, this isn't for you. If you want a simple story of lives and friendships, beautifully written and flawless performances, with depth and character ... Read More:

I can't believe this film never made it to any cinema in the North West. The film is a love story that jumps between decades, set against the backdrop of the Second World War. When you first begin to watch it, you may be a bit confused as to what is going on, because it jumps from America to Belfast and back again in different decades. Stick with it, because it does become gripping viewing. It is well worth seeing, and is one of those stories that unravels as you watch it (getting better and better as it goes along).

It is directed by Richard Attenborough and is well acted throughout by actors such as Christopher Plummer, Shirley Maclaine, Mischa Barton, Neve Campbell etc. The actor Martin McCann who plays young Irish Jimmy brings a refreshing breather ... Read More:

i first saw this film on tv (well the last halfhour)and decided i had to see it from the begining it is very well acted by all.The story is about two friends who run a boarding school then a little girl spreads a nasty rumour that the women are lesbians and the parents remove the children from the school as their world falls apart one of the women realises her true feelings for the other this ends up a sad but thought provoking story. This is well worth seeing especially for maclaine's portrail of martha.

This movie is not a bad movie. It has good performances, especially from Jack Nicholson, and a good story line. But this is one of the most over-rated movies I have ever seen.
The direction is similar to that of a TV movie, very basic and plain, and is what one would expect of any run-of-the-mill director for a major film.
The main problem I have with the movie though is that it does nothing for me- it's not particularly interesting, funny, thoughtful, or novel. The majorty of the film is a series of snapshots of a mother-daughter relationship through time, not at any point doing more than documenting "where they're at", whilst the final third of the film is a melodramatic twist that contiues in the same vein as the first part of the film, rather than attempting ... From the back of the box i was expecting a bridget jones type of movie with emphasis on the tarts and vicars scene but i was sadly disappointed and felt like i had been ripped off with my purchase.
The plot was pathetic and i was amazed that such good actors would stoop to such low scripts.
