Sometimes you see a movie and it makes an instant connection with your own life - you know immediately that you've watched something that you are going to remember for a long long time. Flashbacks of a Fool was for me just such a movie. It's a beautifully composed and poignant story about a choice made in a moment and the consequences for a lifetime. Daniel Craig carefully resists an easy opportunity to cash-in on his success between Bond movies and just push out a clichéd action flick. Instead he delivers an understated but sensitive performance as a washed-up actor with an un-reconciled past, leaving space for an excellent supporting cast. Winstone plays Winstone yet again. He should stick to gangster films where the dialogue is limited and the only acting skill required is to look hard. Could have been good if Henry had been played by an actor.

This trend, in the UK at least, of releasing one dvd (in this case 'Births, Marriages & Deaths', in other examples the first series of a show, like Messiah, The Vice) and then later on releasing box sets like this one (in those other cases the entire series) is a disgrace, meaning you end up having to buy some of the dvd's twice. As for this particular boxset, I do think Ray Winstone is a fantastic actor and I loved 'Vincent' and really do want this series on dvd. But as for the others, I've already bought 'Births, Marriages & Deaths' on dvd and I don't want 'Henry VIII' as I just didn't see Ray as this character and it didn't work well for me.
