I don't think this is a technically brilliant film. I don't think it deserved the best picture Oscar ahead of either The Graduate or Bonnie and Clyde. (Nor did anyone else at the time. Personally I think the latter film is the best product of the three, although The Graduate is easily my favourite.) I think there must have been a bit of politics being played here by the Academy, in showcasing a film with just the right message for its time. It has good things in it, the best being Rod Steiger in an 'I'll show you what real acting is' kind of mood. Really, this was set up to be Poitier's film, but for me he doesn't get a look in, Mr. Steiger is in such hot form: One of the all time great movie performances, this. Pretty good photography, very ... Read More:

This is a fantastic nostalgic film about a group of unruly teenagers and their suffering teacher( Sidney Poitier) in the 60's.An inspirational film which works just as well now. Look out for Patricia Routledge(keeping up appearances) in a small teaching role.Judy Geeson is brilliant playing the young lady with the crush on her teacher, and Lulu's film debut singing the main song,To Sir With Love is just plain superb,if you like musicals with a good story you will love this one.Suitable for all the family, I cant praise this one enough. To Sir With Love [1967]

I had a look at this after being in a conference with a very famous black civil libertarian talking about issues of racial imbalance in his generation (ie. 60s America). This was highly recommended. I found it interesting that a generation or two later the social tendencies are more towards mixed couples (see Gen X & Y) and we really don't totally see just how segregated the world was. It is also quite frightening to see what the world would revert to if there was more laws infringing civil rights. Great movie, great performances by some fantastic actors. Should be a MUST SEE, just to understand what he world looked like, in terms of being racists and prejudiced, not so very long ago and how hard some people had to fight to just be considered ... There are very few films that remain incessantly entertaining after repeated viewings but this is certainly one of them. I would describe it as a comfort movie - one to watch with the girlfriend on stormy afternoons or reassuringly peaceful evenings.
Sneakers is a feelgood comedy-thriller with a plausible and pacy plot and fine performances from a cast that works wonderfully well together.
Reminiscent of 1950's British espionage or courtroom thrillers, it relies, not upon contrived set-piece action sequences but upon strong plot and fine comedic performances from Robert Redford, Sidney Poitier, Mary McDonnell and River Phoenix (among others).
A particularly pleasing aspect of the movie is the soundtrack - composed by James Horner and ... Read More:

This multi-layered ,violently staged, intelligent western about an Apache uprising which catches the army by surprise is memorable and an under-rated masterpiece .

Every moment is tense and every character is a real breathing human being whether Apache, black or white.

James garner is great as the avenging scout whose Comanche wife was scalped by a white man, while Poitier is even better as the ex-soldier horse wrangler who dreams of being an entrepreuner one day, together they have to escort the army detail of 30 green soldiers across Apache land where an uprising is in progress.

Bibi anderson is the estranged wife of the indian hater Dennis Weaver ,who was abducted by Apaches and lived as a squaw till being rescued ... Read More:

This is not a review per se, but rather a question for the Marketplace sellers: are any of you selling a copy that is Region 1 coded or multi-regional? I would be interested.

And as far as a review, I believe Sidney Poitier to be the greatest living actor. To my mind, his greatest film is "In the Heat of the Night." Rod Steiger is exceptional as the sheriff of Sparta, MS as well. "Lilies of the Field" is his best "lighter" role, and he won an Oscar for that. Two "sleepers" you might find enjoyable: "Brother John" and "A Patch of Blue." (Warning: viewing "A Patch of Blue" may require you to keep a box of tissues handy throughout the film.)

One of the films of the mid-1990s when America had gotten out of its anti-Russian paranoia after the fall of the Berlin Wall. The Russians and the Americans are working together against international terror-mongers. A real cocktail. The Russian mafia, slightly Georgian and Caucasian in those days (for the Americans, see Red Heat), the Basque separatist gone underground, the IRA getting little by little out of the closet and back on the political turf, and then the free-lance American adventurers who are doing it for the pleasure of killing in the most visible and gross way possible. But we have to note there is a traitor in the team and the traitor is a Russian of course. The Russians have never been totally redeemed. And now the Georgian mafia has gone ... Read More:

A Helicopter approaches the US war ship and deposits a writer Ben Munceford (Sidney Poitier) and a naval doctor Lt. Cmdr. Chester Potter, MD (Martin Balsam).

It is the peak of the cold war and the last thing this ship or captain Eric Finlander (Richard Widmark) needs is a writer or a doctor. In fact both will prove to be a burden as the ship’s I strung and efficient crew are out to find a soviet sub, any soviet sub where it does not belong.

The captain has a history of forcing soviet subs to the surface in embarrassing locations. The captain’s companion is Cmmdre. Wolfgang Schrepke, German Navy (Eric Portman), an expert on submarine tactics.

I can't get enough of Mr. Poitier. It' was great that he won Best Actor on this film playing Homer Smith, who is an out-of-work construction worker that helps a group of foreign (East European) Catholic nuns build their church and learn to speak English. Lilia Skala was great too. She earned her only Academy Award nomination (Supporting Actress) playing the head Mother Superior Maria. There are a lot of wonderful touching moments and funny interactions between these two main characters that will have you glued to the set.

Sidney Poitier is masterful in this role and is greatly remembered for it. His subtle humor fills the plot, even becoming hilarious at times. In one scene Homer is teaching the German nuns English, and he cannot help himself from modeling for them ... Read More:
