DVD : Richard Wagner - Der Ring des Nibelungen [2007]
I saw this production first on VHS Video - and still have all of them. I enjoyed it then, but spent most of the time looking at the translation and synopsis which came with it. I them saw it on television and was glued to it. I now have it on DVD - this version - and there is only one word I can say about it - wow! It is a mixture of modern with traditional and it works really well. It is very atmospheric and full marks go to the lighting and stage technicians. The use of lasers and smoke in 'Das Rheingold' were stunning to say the least. The depth of the acting and music was also outstanding. Although it has a modern flavour, it is easy to determine who is who. (Dare I say it - but this version is better than the recent version by the Royal ... Read More:

This is a rare chance to see a 'naturalistic' Ring cycle, but there are problems with this production of Gotterdammerung.

The main one is Hildegard Behrens - her singing is, at times, way off, almost embarrassingly so. I don't know if she over strained her voice, or what, but it is very poor in places, yet okay in others.

There also seems to be a problem with the colour balance on this, and indeed other, DG DVDs - the colour is so weak as to be almost non-existent! It almost looks like monochrome.

Still, it's worth watching - Matti Salminen is very powerful as Hagan, and it makes a change from abstract sets and lots of symbolism. But it would be good to see this sort of production at Bayreuth occasionally...

The problem is that, although advertised as a PAL DVD, it is in fact an NTSC System 16.9 (whatever that means) Regions 2345. In other words it doesn't work on a US NTSC machine and is B&W on a European PAL machine.
This is a great shame because it is a most brilliant production: John Tomlinson, Anne Evans, Seigfried Jerusalem and the versatile Graham Clark all in fine voice with superb acting. Harry Kupfer's staging presents the narrative in a straightforward manner but with heart stopping, moving and dramatic interpretations. This is truly a great Ring. I can't forget it.

I've owned this performance for some years, firstly on video and then on DVD, and have always found it a disappointment, especially in comparison to Levine's marvellous "Ring" and outsanding "Meistersinger" from the NY Metropolitan Opera. From the prelude to Act 1 the music seems to drag, and key moments do not come to life. The Klingsor's kingdom lacks its otherworldly quality here, and the Good Friday Music does not bring its usual magic. This lack of passion transmits itself to the singers and chorus and seems to last throughout the opera.

A number of critics have blamed Levine's slow tempos for the malaise. I don't think this is the explanation. For example, although the prelude to Act 1 lasts 14 minutes here compared to 12 minutes ... Read More:

I have seen this DVD and I like it very much. I would have preferred the opera in chech language but otherwise this is a very good performance. Lucia Popp and Siegfried Jerusalem sing (and act) beautifully and other performers are good, too. I enjoyed this performance and can highly recommend it!
