DVD : Mozart: Die Zauberflote (The Magic Flute) -- Royal Opera House/Davis [2003]

If you are in process of deciding which DVD of Die Zauberflöte to buy, then I must implore you to choose this!

I disagree somewhat with the previous reviewer who found fault with Diana Damrau's stage presence, as I believe her and the director's interpretation of the character brought a much needed angle to the production. Yes, the stereotypical Queen of the Night is the dominating powerhouse who would strike fear into the entire audience, but I still believe that Damrau accomplishes this whilst still maintaining a sense of dimension and though perhaps not to everyone's taste, a hint of mortality.

The direction is world class, the choreography fantastic (especially with the puppetry), the set and costume breath-taking ... Read More:

"Maazel has perpetuated a fraud" . . . "a slick perversion of Orwell by the super rich Maazel who bought his way to [Covent Garden]" . . . "Keenlyside (Smith) and Gustavson (Julia) fail to relate" . . . "Maazel sucks the life and irony out of Orwell" . . . "Why this tripe has been given airtime at Covent Garden . . . is a mystery"

These and more like it were all that I read following the premiere of Maazel's opera. It seemed as though every critic attempted to outdo the next in finding witty words to tell us what a piece of crap this "non-opera" was. Still, with its brilliant cast, the direction of theatrical wizard Robert Lepage, and one of my favorite stories (that I and a friend/fellow student attempted to musicalize at theatre school) I've ... This video of Hamlet by Ambroise Thomas is simply brilliant.

Baritone Simon Keenlyside as Hamlet is astonishing. He is a great actor, especially for a singer, and he adapts his light baritone to the dramatic requirements of the opera with intelligence and total conviction. He has a beautiful instrument and uses it well, with lovely shading alongside outbursts of dramatic intensity.

This was the first time I have seen soprano Natalie Dessay in action, although I have heard her several times on disk. She walked through Ophelia's mad scene as if it were a vocal stroll in the park, with shattering results. It was the most harrowing operatic mad scene I have ever seen.

The opera itself, while certainly interesting, is not ... Read More:

A beautiful production, wonderful music. Rene Jacos weaves his usual magic from the orchestra and soloists. Someone who has been to the production doesn't like the camera work, in particular the many close ups, but this didn't distract from the quality of the performance. Also an interesting look behind the scenes.

This production has to compare with earlier performances with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Elisabeth Soderstrom. The basic requirement is a Countess who is European in style and mannerisms and who doesn't allow the sheer beauty of the music to make her less of an Austro-German. This production may well be the best we are going to get for a long time. The men are outstanding with clear diction and lively acting. Kiri's singing is as always beautifully poised and graceful and the final scene when she is alone on the stage is excellent. My beef is with her words - even a German speaker new to Capriccio is unlikely to follow the Countess's role without the subtitles. Words are lost in music. This is a bit ironic for a piece all about the competing or differing ... Read More:
