I'm afraid this movie was a bit of a pain for me. Too slow moving, wooden dialogue and historically incorrect.
However, having lusted after Sophia Loren from an early age, anything with her in it can't be all bad!
The Moors were not driven from Spain in 1099 as the movie suggests, but Moorish Kingdoms like Granada flourished until being expelled in 1492 (the year before Colon/Columbus "discovered" America )
The last Moors left in 1502.
There's nothing really wrong with the movie, but for me, not a lot is right.

This is a musical from 1972.
It is therefore amazing how much I like this film.
It has a good enjoyable story and it made me think.

Sophia Loren, even as a scruffy barmaid looks gorgeous, and Peter O'toole is ... Peter O'Toole. There are some smaller parts for other well known stars (like Brian Blessed). It is a very colourful and imaginative film, and the fact that it is a musical, doesn't mean that it lacks in meaning.

What I liked especially about it, is it's layeredness.
The story starts with Cervantes (O'Toole) being picked up and thrown into jail, to await the inquisition. In jail he (and his side-kick) needs to defend himself against the other detainees. He does this by telling and enacting his story of Don ... Read More:

This was a very pleasant movie experience for me as the Napoleonic invasion of Spain is dressed as a costume drama with some great action pieces and a soul searching love affair between a trio played by the 2 men and the woman who is a temptress and also the purest woman around .

Sophia loren is perfectly cast as the fiery romantic spanish resistance fighter who is torn between dreams of a true love in devonshire with grant or a death on the plains of avilla and she brings real passion to this spectacle, she has a fire in her eyes which burns and sears your soul and she is oozing sex appeal in even the soggy river crossing scenes ,but she also has a tenderness which makes her a martyr as intended .

Stanley kramer knew how to manipulate ... Read More:

Who thinks up the character names? Joe January (John Wayne) drifter, Dita (Sophia Loren) of ill repute, and Paul Bonnard (Rossano Brazzi) bible thumper, teem up to look for a lost city and possibly a lost treasure. Paul has a map, Joe knows the territory, and Dita is fun to look at. There are a few inconsistencies and maybe not the best music but you can get lost in the story and have fun speculating as to what is happening next.
When they get to their destination they find more than a city. They find themselves and it isn't pretty.
So who gets what? Is there really a treasure? And just who is the good guy?

In 1976, two rail-orientated films were released : "Silver Streak", directed by Arthur Hiller, and the more superior disaster-epic, "The Cassandra Crossing", directed by George Pan Cosmatos.

The Cassandra Crossing centres around the chain of events of two terrorists mounting a raid on The International Health Organisation in Geneva, and results in both becoming infected with the plague, and one of them escaping on the Euro-Continental Express carrying this deadly epidemic.

Enter Richard Harris as Dr Johnathan Chamberlain, Ingrid Thulin, as Dr Stradler, and Burt Lancaster as the unpleasant Colonel Steven MacKenzie as the main players as each one of them has a different method of containing the disease.

Lee Strasberg's, Mr Kaplan is one ... Read More:
