Persuasion is my favourite book and this adaptation does it justice. The tone of the film matches the tone of the book: whistful. Anne is beautifully portrayed by Amanda Root and Ciaran Hinds is wonderful as the charismatic Captain Wentworth. It's far subtler than the more recent ITV adaptation, and because of that all the more beautiful. Scenes in this film would melt the hardest of hearts, yet it is still funny. The perfect comfort film.

What makes this version of Emma enjoyable is the exquisite costumes, locations and colour. I love the portrayals of Miss Bates, Mr & Mrs Elton & Mrs Weston (or poor Miss Taylor). Gwyneth Paltrow makes a pleasant Emma, but although I love her as an actress, I don't think she has really identified with the character of Emma. I am not convinced of Harriet Smith or Frank Churchill either, they are just not authentic to the characters. Mr Knightley is just about passable. The main problem with this is that the story has been severely condensed and I feel alot of the important scenes in the book have been dropped, which has greatly reduced the effect of the story. The TV version starring Kate Beckinsale & Mark Strong have much stronger character ... Read More:

I remember watching this as a child, and I really enjoyed it then. Due to a lack of repeats on the BBC I'd almost forgot about it, until I found it in a bargain bucket.
This is one of the most underatted Sitcoms of all time! It is hillarious, and shows Lee Evans as always at his very best. There are 8 episodes, that follow Lee trying to pick his life up after been kicked out by his wife.
There is plenty of physical comedy as well as verbal comedy in this fantastic traditional style comedy.
It's a bargain well worth owning, plus there is plenty of extras too. I only wish they'd wrote more!

As the opening credits rolled on this movie I started to get misgivings. A Baldwin brother... but sadly William not Alec, a Thompson sister, unfortunately Sophie and not Emma, a Hollywood actress - but its Jeanne Tripplehorn, one of that breed of B-list American babes who along with the likes of Andie MacDowell happily slum it in British made movies. Julie Andrews leads the lack lustre cast as an aristocratic matriarch in 1950s British society. Many years living in LA have given Dame Julie's accent a strange mid Atantic twang which does not serve her well in this supposedly terribly English role. The plot is not the most intriguing and the script provides no real laughs. The scenery's pretty enough and there's nothing here that would offend your grannie. To sum up, its ... Read More:

Creating empathy for Harris with a German is not easy but this drama succeeded. First of all the film shows that Harris had a clear military target and a strategic objective. Furthermore the author plays devil's advocate in suggesting that Harris' strategy of aerial bombardment would have shortened the war as opposed to aiming at specific targets. Harris' duty as a soldier is to his men and his country regardless of the cost to others. Thaw plays him as a complex character: on the one hand as a ruthless soldier but on the other hand also as a human being. The film raises a lot of moral questions and does not provide easy answers but food for thought. It also sows what a fine actor John Thaw is: here he acts very restrained and controlled as opposed to his Morse/ Regan persona. ... Read More:

DVD : Dancing At Lughnasa [1998]
Directed by Pat O'Connor and exquisitely filmed (by Kenneth MacMillan) in the countryside of Donegal, this ensemble drama is adapted from the stage play by Brian Friel. Screenwriter Frank McGuinness sticks close to the dialogue of the play but opens up the rural cottage setting to include brief scenes of the town of Ballybeg, the stunning and untamed countryside, and the pagan harvest celebration, the Feast of Lughnasa. Set in 1936, the film focuses on the difficult lives of five unmarried sisters and an eight-year-old love child, when Ireland was on the verge of World War II and industrialization. The film stresses character and theme, rather than plot, highlighting the relationships among the sisters as they cope with the arrival of their brother, a priest returning from Uganda after twenty ... Having been a fan of VIZ for a long time (indeed I am a subscriber) the Fat Slags is one of my favourite comic strips, so I was eagerly looking forward to seeing the DVD.

What a disappointment! The 'plot' is thin, the acting unconvincing (as are the hideous "fat suits" the otherwise-slim actresses have to wear) and the script puerile.

Admittedly, there are one or two laugh-out-loud moments (if you have a toilet humour) but not enough to keep the viewers' attention for the 72 minutes of the video.

Stick to the comic strip - it's much funnier.

DVD : The Young Visiters or Mr. Salteena's Plan [2003] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Written originally by a young Victorian girl one summer, The Young Visiters has never been out of print since it was rediscovered some years later. This 9-year-old's brilliant observations of a surreal society have been flawlessly translated to the small screen by the BBC, resulting in a comedy that - although entirely suitable for children - is at times as black as other classic BBC comedy ventures.

The style of it reminded me almost of The League of Gentlemen (although, obviously, lacking the mature content) since the extremeties that the hero Mr Salteena endures to find his way over to the 'right side of the blanket' are at times a bleak prospect, while at the same time being side-achingly funny.

The simple (but also surprisingly insightful) story woven by young Daisy ... Read More:
