The title says it all, I think and the reviewer who considers it classist and misogynist has obviously failed to see the point of the movie which actually makes fun of these attitudes. Remember the scene at Mrs. Higgin's house or Alfred P. Doolite's remarks on 'middle-class morality' - hardly narrow-minded.

Ceila Johnson (Laura Jesson)and Trevor Howard (Dr Alec Harvey)play two happily married strangers who are thrown together by fate. The film is England in a bygone age ('we were very gay during lunch')innocently referring to having drunk champagne one lunchtime and being very happy. He plays a doctor while she is a housewife who takes a weekly train to shop, see a film and to change her library books. Although she appears happily married, as the film progresses, it is interesting to see the innocent way in which her(and his) feelings grow for one another, whilst always being very polite. After agonising and then deciding to go and spend some time with Alec in his friend's flat one evening and almost almost being caught, Laura decides that they must ... Read More:

A classic film from Ealing Studios focusing on the glorious bygone days of British Railways.
The Titfield railway is up for closure. Mortified, the local community propose to run the railway themselves, competing with the local bus company. Superbly shot in the beautiful West Country in glorious technicolour and with steam trains and the atmosphere of the tranquil branch line galore. A bit strange in places, especially when we are expected to believe a steam engine can run off the rails, however, this is Ealing and nothing should be taken too seriously.
As this film centres around a railway closure, could this have been one of Dr. Beeching's favourites?
First class!!

This film is an absolute classic and, as a wonderful example of Ealing comedy at its best, there is nothing to add to the positive - five star - reviews already posted.

This DVD version, however, comes with no insert of any kind. The box gives us the title of the film and a skeletal list of the principal actors, nothing more. No subtitles, no extras, no notes, no other information.

The most disappointing of all is the sound-track. Fuzzy and indistinct for much of the time, it takes one back to the flea-pit cinemas of the '50s or to a screening in the village hall.

What a shame.

a classic british comedy comes to dvd. the film is the tale of mister holland, a lowly bank clerk who comes to work each day in his suit and bowler hat, and fusses a lot about his job, which is transferring gold bullion to a bank. everyone thinks he's a dull little man with no imagination, but he's really got more than anyone expects, and has been planning for years to rob the bank and get away with the gold.

When he meets mister pendlebury, a souvenir trinket maker, he finally has the last element of his plan. the two recruit a couple of crooks to help them, and the robbery of the century is go. but will they get away with it?

Depicting a long gone britain of the the early 50's, this is a fun gentle comedy. it's not laugh out loud ... Read More:

Great film. One can only imagine the frame of mind of those originally watching it during the war. Brilliantly avoids the trap of portraying characters as heroes, they're just normal flawed fellows... who you don't necessarily like, until they're the tight knit fighting unit we see at the end. Isn't propaganda clever?
David Niven is fantastic - a role model for every Englishman.
The rest of the cast are exceptional too. The last shots, soldiers advancing bravely through the smoke, was surely lifted for the opening credits of Dad's Army years later - and both featured the brilliant John Laurie.

A marvellously crafted and witty take on the legendary detective Sherlock Holmes for all fans of his. It is a slanted, almost subversive reading of him, giving us a real man, with real vices and defects, and a real sense of humour, and gives us a far from stodgy Dr. Watson, much more a real friend of his than in other versions. This is all intended to give us something new, something quite tantalising, and something quite rewarding. It utterly succeeds in this, and throws in an adventure dripping in that dark Victorian quality all Holmes adventures have. It is clearly made by a huge fan of his, and Wilder revels at the chance of giving Sherlock's mysterious brother a prominent role. Stephens as Holmes is sensational. The screenplay is sparklingly good, and the story itself ... Read More:
