Don't be mislead by the tacky cover. Although this begins as a cheaper, poorer quality version of The Godfather, it develops into to a quite sophisticated and controversial take on Italian crime and politics. A previous reviewer laments the fact that the characters were cheap, humourless scumbags compared to the more likeable and funny murderers of Goodfellas. Well, that's because Hollywood, even at its best, will always make its characters sympathetic, whereas here we see the characters as they are - ruthless, fairly stupid, nasty, brutal and unpleasant. Killers are like that. Based on real events and ultimately worthwhile, the film certainly made me want to read the book it's based on and find out more about the issues raised here. ... Read More:

Wonderful film about 1970s idealism in Paris and its effect on a nine year old girl. Anna watches with dismay as her parents follow their ideals, supporting the marxist government in Chile, taking in refugees from Franco's Spain and generally disrupting her comfortable, bourgeois existence. The film neither favours nor criticises left or right, merely observing events as they unfold with the resulting conflicts surrounding Anna's family and friends. Directed with wisdom and economy, not a moment is wasted. The two child actors (Anna's brother, younger, easy going and less affected plays a smaller part) are amazingly convincing - especially when viewing the extras, which show the children as they are - just children, with little idea of the complexities ... This is a most beautiful film in my opinion. By turns funny and touching this was a fanatastic cinematic experience for me. I found myself unable to take sides as the characters in front of me turn into real people. This film combines great acting with a good story: a recent widow finds out that her husband had a lover. She decides to dig in just be surprised by the fact that the lover was a man. Yet she keeps coming back to this new world, trying to find herself by finding out who her husband really was. The DVD is good without going really very far. There's a trailer, a couple of trailers for other films, a making of. The menus I found slightly annoying but might be just my copy.

I have to confess at the start that I watched this film in Italian, and so I don't know how good the translation into English is. But the film itself is absolutely superb! It shows absolutely the worst sides of men and women inside relationships but without ever veering into parody and always staying realistic. As a man watching it you find yourself hating women by the end of the film for the way in which they behave and if you're a woman you'll find yourself hating men for the same reason - (so probably not a film to watch with your partner) - but a film to watch at any other opportunity. I don't want to give the story away, but...a man tempted into cheating on his pregnant wife finds out the consequences...it might sound soppy but it really isn't, it's ... Read More:
