This is a staggeringly good piece of TV drama which has justifiably become a classic. It's hard to imagine any producer today taking the time to explore a novel in the way this adaptation does, a full 11 episodes which allow the viewer to luxuriate in the story and thoroughly explore the characters. There has always been debate over whether there was a mythological "Golden Age of TV", but I think the early 1980s saw something quite remarkable at Granada Studios, at least in the field of period adaptations, and Brideshead might just be the pinnacle.

Evelyn Waugh's novel is a heady evocation of time and place, as well as an exploration of spirituality, and the series captures all this with consummate skill, from the glorious period ... Read More:

I don't know whether this film hits my heart the way it does because of the feelings of friendship, love, closeness to others or the warmth of that transformation Babette's cooking creates, but when the feast starts and for the rest of the movie, I choke up often.

Yes, this is a feel-good movie, but without a speck of mawkishness or facile sentimentality. Please note that elements of the plot are discussed. Babette's Feast tells its story with restraint and care, and it lets us discover for ourselves the values of grace and love. All we need to know is that Babette Harsant (Stephane Audran) was a French refugee who was given shelter by two aging sisters in a tiny community on the coast of Jutland. The sisters lead what remains of their ... Read More:

DVD : Brideshead Revisited - Complete Series
Goodness me, people do get their knickers in a twist about this series. Although there is plenty that is excellent about it (namely the performances) there is one crashing great problem with it and that's the screenplay which is just plain lazy to the point of excess (if that isn't some kind of oxymoron).

This must have been an easy ride for John Mortimer. All he did was take the dialogue from the novel and stick it in screenplay form, voila. Don't believe me? Read a chapter of the novel, watch an episode, keep going to the end and you'll see what I mean. And any other gaps are just plugged with long tracts of voiceover which is always an indication that a writer doesn't have the creativity to do something more filmic.

Anyone who has enjoyed the books will love this film, which brings Madeline's Paris to life and involves Madeline and her friends in a madcap adventure to save their school when closure threatens. Interest for the boys is provided by the next-door neighbour, Pepito, but on the whole this is a girl's film, and a very enjoyable one. It will teach your children to exclaim "voila" in a convincing French accent too!

This newly released collection of Eric Rohmer's first full length film, alongside the two shorter films which make up the start of the 'Six Moral Tales' series, is a must-have. All three films sparkle with life, energy and filmmaking skill and imagination, and all three contain plenty of hints of what is to come later in Rohmer's career.

My favourite from this selection is probably the shortest of the three films, 'La Boulangere de Monceau (The Girl at the Monceau Bakery)', which presents a typical moral and amorous dilemma which Rohmer revisits many times later in films such as 'A Summer's Tale'. A man in love with more than one woman has to make a choice - but will his eventual love be interested in him? The themes are simple and timeless ... Read More:

I watched this in bed and I think it's a really good action film, one of VAN DAMME's best.
It's action all the way - explosions, gun battles and a good climax fight.

The story is: Alan Moreau's investigation into the death of his identical twin brother leads leads him from the South of France to the mean streets of New York City and into the arms of his brother's beautiful girlfriend.
Persued by ruthless Russian mobsters and renegade FBI agents, the duo must race against time to solve his brother's murder and expose an international conspiracy.
There's only one problem: all traces of his brother's life are rapidly disappearing, and the one person who knew him best may not be yelling all she knows.

I had high expectations ... Read More:

If you are looking for an action-packed, thrill-a-minute sort of film then you should probably look elsewhere. If that first sentence hasn't put you off buying Le Boucher then you'll know it's right for you. The film contains some superb acting, but the real star of the show for me was the French countryside. The 1960s in rural France are wonderfully evoked and gave me a sense of longing to step into that now disappeared world.

For me the psychological thrill element worked perfectly. It's not clear whether or not the seemingly nice butcher (who, incidentally, looks quite like Harry H Corbett from Steptoe and Son) from from the village is a sadistic killer or simply what he purports to be. Is the schoolmistress safe with him in her house? The film builds to ... Read More:

DVD : Violette [1978] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
I first saw "Violette" soon after it was first released in France in 1978 (yes, I was much younger then). I watched the film at least three more times between then and 1980; and a couple more times after that. Today, almost three decades later, I still think "Violette" is Claude Chabrol's best contribution to cinema, and one of the greatest non-action movies of all time. Stunning -- a masterpiece.
