Blacckadder is one of the Britains finest ever comedies. The comic genius that is Rowan Atikinson as Edmund Blackadder, outstandingly supported throughout by the brilliant Tony Robinson (before his "Time Team" days) as his ever suffering side kick Baldrick, and by Tim McInnery, Steven Fry and Hugh Laurie, among others.

The first series is set in the 1490s when, apparently, the history books were incorrectly written and Richard III wasn't defeated at the battle of Bosworth Field by Henry Tudor, but was succeeded on the throne of England by his brother Richard IV (Brian Blessed) after being beheaded at the battle of Bosworth Field by his clutz of a nephew, Prince Edmunded Pentagonist, who later (after briefly considering calling himself "The Black Vegetable") ... QI is a class act in every way, shape and form. It continues to be as entertaining as it is informative and damned worth a watch whoever you are and whatever your interests might be. Because the questions on QI are so absurdly difficult, contestants are awarded points for being interesting and sharing their knowledge. Boring, incorrect and obvious answers (usually things most of us were incorrectly taught in school, or have been proved differently since) are highlighted, and the record put straight.

You can't go wrong with QI.

I didn't think Jeeves & Wooster could ever be succesfully transferred to screen until I saw this series. Absolutely brilliant! Lovely settings, costumes, music etc to back up the characters. Minor quibbles: frequent casting changes (e.g. three different Madeleine Bassets over the course of the series!), the third series is not quite as good as the first two and the fourth series is not as good as the third, oh, and of course the infuriating anti-piracy advert that you can't skip...my dvd player will only pause for about a minute before going back to the beginning, so every time I make a cup of tea, answer the phone etc...I have to watch that horrible thing all over again! I loved this series though, have watched it so much that I'm probably going to have to buy a new set ... Read More:

Amen to the other reviews here. For me it's all enhanced by the Alan factor. The poor man only has to open his mouth to set the "urban myth" alarm off, and there's something slightly occult about the way his buzzer noise is always marginally more ridiculous than everyone else's! One of the saving graces of digital age TV.

I enjoy the sub-genre of apocalyptic, post-apocalyptic, or dystoptian future fiction, so seeing this V for Vendetta was a no-brainer for me.

Unfortunately, the things I found distasteful about this movie outweighed any of the positive aspects that other viewers have mentioned (e.g. cautionary tale, visuals, etc.).

The comparisons to Orwell's 1984 are appropriate, but Orwell's motives were far more interesting: a committed socialist who warns of a state in which even his own ideals are misused to abuse the population. The same book coming from a committed fascist would not have seemed so sincere.

Portman's Evey is tortured by someone who believes he is teaching her a lesson and seeks her submission and service. Imagine being abducted and tortured by someone ... Read More:

This box set had me enthraled all the way through, not just because I'm into family history but because it was good 'story telling'. All of my family enjoyed it and I would recommend it to anyone.

I agree with the previous reviews. This box set is a must have.
I've discovered Hugh Laurie only in 2007 (yes, I know....) and saw those sketches in a place you know. If I had never seen the sketches on this place I wouldn't have known they existed.
It's a pleasure to have them all. I just have a complaint : there's no booklet with the titles of the sketches, the titles of the songs (once again, there's a place where you can find them...).
As I'm french, I appreciate the english subtitles.
There's another extra : The Cambridge Footlights review (1982) on disc 2.

There are good aspects to this film. And then there are bad. The good includes the story (set in the future where the government controls the population, removing privelidges such as freedom, food, opposition), the twists and turns in the plot, the filming (its spectacular to the eyes if nothing else), and certain characters and actors playing those roles (Stephen Fry, for example). However, the first 30 minutes of this film, though full of action, failed to grip me (maybe there should have been an explanation at the start about what was going on exactly), Natalie Portman's acting failed to convince me (and I'm a fan of hers usually!), the love story between the two main characters was bizarre, and sometimes it becomes rather difficult to work out exactly what is going on. It's a good film, but had the potential ... Read More:

Love Branagh. Hate opera. Thought I'd give this a shot and I quite enjoyed it but I am not converted. Helped that it was in English. However, what I don't like about Opera is the way, particularly the women sing, it is not a natural noise. I don't understand what they are trying to say and the plot is pretty mad in any case so it being unclear is not great. What would have REALLY helped is subtitles. There are none and I think that is really a missed opportunity.
