Like the other reviewers here I watched this on BBC Four and it was certainly an interesting documentary. In some ways one time confirmed Reaganite Neil Young went up in my estimation, although he is still comes across at the age of 63 as confused, self centred, and contradictory as a teenager - no doubt one of the reasons he has stayed musically relevant over the years.Unfortunately, the two most politically aware members of CSNY, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash, don't really get much credit. At the beginning of the doc CSNY are introduced as legendary anti-war performers, which I confess, as someone who saw them live in 1974, I found rather confusing, because it was in fact CS&N who were overtly anti-war.For those who doubt this and think I'm ... The DVD overall is really very pleasant, enjoyable. Singing and harmonies are of typically high CSN standard. Despite a number of criticisms of Crosby being stoned, etc - maybe so although I did not notice - but his singing can be wonderful - especially on Long Time Comin'.

However, all pales beside an absolutely monumental version of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. It is utterly compelling. Stephen Stills on guitar here is other worldly. Perfect timing, harmonies intricate and effortless, and when the final do-do-do-dodo comes, the audience joins in & it is simply euphoric. Watch and listen to this - they were never better.

DVD : Best of Musikladen Live: Stephen Stills & Manassas [2000] (REGION 1) (NTSC)
Scruffy, jetlagged and absolutely live in a German TV studio sometime in late '72, this is a rare treat for Stills fans. Taking their material from the Manassas double album, Stills, Chris Hillman, Al Perkins and the rest of the band play up a storm. Great sound, dodgy hairdos, fab vintage Gretsches & Gibsons - this is how country-rock was before MIDI and it's so good it'll put you off ever playing guitar again! Well worth every penny, buy it before they delete it...
