"In the days after it first opened in early 1964, Stanley Kubrick's "Dr. Strangelove" took on the enchanted aura of a film that had gotten away with something. Johnson was in the White House, the Republicans were grooming Goldwater, both sides took the Cold War with grim solemnity, and the world was learning to be comfortable with the term "nuclear deterrent," which meant that if you blow me up, I'm gonna blow you up, and then we'll all be dead. "Better dead than Red," some said. Others said the opposite. The choice was not appealing. The Bomb overshadowed global politics. It was a kind of ultimate hole card in a game where the stakes were life on earth." Roger Ebert

The opening joke takes about one tenth of the total film time to set up and fails to deliver a laugh (for the simple reason that the punchline is entirely predictable and the delivery contains little else that is worth the trouble of watching). After this, there seems no reason to continue viewing. Already bored senseless, I couldn't take the insipid interrogation scene that follows.

Reader, I buried this deadly dull dvd in the depths of my time capsule, only to be opened when life has lost flavour and time drags eternal (as it did for twenty minutes in front of this uncelebrated cure for insomnia).

I didn't come to this film for a Marlowe-in-the-flesh type experience, but I was hoping for some sort of experience. I didn't come with an aversion ... Read More:

One of Kubrick's early films, and the first to show the world that here was a film director who would never produce run of the mill movies. Its essentially a heist movie set a horse race track, but made in a film noir style complete with narration and a multitude of interesting characters, who are virtually all up to no good.

For the 1950's this is a highly original film. Events are not neccessarily seen chronologically, so we get to see an event and then get to see in detail how one of the major players affected the event. Think how Pulp Fiction played with time. Well this does it on a smaller scale but more often.

As films go this one is pretty much perfect. I was only going to give this 4 stars but when I tried to justify this I honestly couldn't think ... Read More:

The MGM DVD (with brown tinted cover) is a poor, blurred release with a heavily cut opening credit sequence. Released in Australia, Switzerland and France in 2005, it was the first attempt made for a DVD release in the English language. The Paramount Region 1 DVD available from amazon.com is the very best, and also the 20th Century Fox DVD, virtually the same as the Paramount print and available from amazon.co.uk is just as good. Don't waste time or money on the MGM DVD.

I first saw these films when they were aired on channel 5 a while ago but only saw about half of the first film, all of the second and none of the the third one. So the incentive was there to buy them, after what i had seen of them i thought it would make a great addition to my dvds. I wasnt wrong either. Though to be honest i couldnt see some of my friends either watching them or buying them, as these films aren't mindless action and explosion fests. They take time to watch, literally and mentally. If you really want to get the best from them, set aside a night where you can watch them in peace to soak up the class of them directing, script, acting and story. They are completely different to the more modern gangster/mafia films. The time is taken for you to get to know the characters, and it is held ... Read More:

This bargain "collection" features three of Stanley Kubrick's earliest feature films: Killer's Kiss, The Killing and Paths of Glory.

Killer's Kiss (1955) was, after the barely-released and now-unavailable Fear & Desire, the first of Kubrick's movies to see the light of day. It draws heavily upon a short boxing documentary which Kubrick produced earlier, called "The Day of the Fight", but is none the worse for that, and certainly has its moments. Look out for the scene amongst the shop dummies and the chase through the streets near the end which is eerily prescient of the much later "2001: a space odyssey" (1968).

The Killing (1956) is a giant leap forward, and tells its story in an unconventional way, which Tarantino acknowledged as a prime source for his "Reservoir Dogs" debut. The ... Read More:

This DVD doesn't offer the best-looking print available, but it's still well worth a look. A great performance by Joan Crawford as a proto-feminist businesswoman in the wild west. Sterling Hayden, Mercedes Cambridge, Scott Brady, Ward Bond, Ernest Borgnine and Royal Dano are among the sterling supporting cast.

The problem with todays crime movies is that so many of them talk the talk but dont walk the walk.
John Houston's 1953 heist movie puts them all to shame, simply because it understands what makes career criminals tick, and it manages to combine street style with character substance. On one level there is the plan, the operation and the betrayal that inevitably follows. But beneath this we are given glimpses into the domestic lives, impossible dreams and personality flaws of the heavy, the safecracker, the mastermind, the getaway driver, the financier- character types transformed into real flesh and blood. Brilliant.
