The novel of "The Other Boleyn Girl" is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I've re-read it many times and can see why it would make an excellent subject for dramatisation so why is it so difficult to get right? OK, so certain things may have to be altered to suit modern sensibilites. The fact that Mary was in her early teens when she started her affair with Henry wouldn't sit comfortably with your average cinema audience so I can understand that being altered.

I wanted to like this largely because I didn't like the Hollywood version. The chauvanist in me wanted to think that the BBC could do it better (it usually does after all.) Sadly, I was disapointed. The whole thing seemed colourless and lacking in the sense of drama and excitement ... Read More:

I have just finished watching this set. I had seen some early episodes originally but watched all again. It is almost a bit "Lost on Mars" as the early series now do seem dated or rather perfectly portraying that time - the early 1990s. I found myself watching the clothes of DCI Tennison and of course the ageing of her in her character with all the trials and tribulations faced by a woman in the police force and in her personal life. She is a demanding , admirable yet imperfect character and it is heart wrenching to see the last episode when retirement beckons. Absolutely fantastic performance by Helen Mirren and of course the rest who make their characters just so believable!

I love this film! Shakespeare converted well into film form is a delight (see Branagh's 'Much Ado' as well) and this film is excellent.
All the characters are note perfect, and there is not a single weak performance amongst them.
Although some scenes are swapped around or merged, that helps to show the cohesion of the plot strands and works extremely well.
Characters have a dark as well as a light side; Sir Toby is a classic funny drunk, but he's also a man who is exploiting Sir Andrew for his money and keeping Maria at arm's length. Mel Smith is absolutely brilliant in the role.
Feste the Clown is a much more tragic figure than the only usually portrayed; a man with a deep melancholy, driven back to Olivia's house for lack of food and ... Read More:

Really a great set of twin gangster movies!! Unlike American shoot'em ups, these two have more gangster attitudes and darkness to them than blood and gore! By watching both movies it is obvious that they were directed by the same Guy Ritchie which uses a similar style for both movies but with their own uniqueness.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels: More of a gangster movie than Snatch and there were more spectacular camera shots that caught my eye, such as the extreme close ups on the pupils of the eye and their contraction as a way of emphasizing the responses and thoughts of the characters. The plot tends to get more and more complicated as the movie progresses and then an unexpected ending that ends the whole movie and sort of leaves the viewer in a clif hanger ... Read More:

I love this film.
Fast - funny - pacy and full of great true to life characters - it is the closest thing to perfection.
It is right up there with Get Carter - Till Death Us Do Part and A Clockwork Orange.
The best thing to come out of British Cinema for more than 20 years - I would love a sequal.

i think one of the frustrations of reading reviews of this film, is the focus on the sexual.

whereas, what i felt spoke the brilliance of the film was the familial relations. the undervalued emotionally frustrated youngest daughter spoke volumes of the mother's failure to love, essentially.

Lock, stock and 2 smoking barrels is a crime tale about a group of friends from London who happen to lose a game of poker, they end up in a lot of debt thus having to get out of it. The story takes many twists & turns and will also make you laugh as it has a very good use of wry & dark humor. The plot evolves around one man but there are many characters who share as if not more an important role. The star of the show in this movie is Vinnie Jones who acts brilliantly.
I recomed 'Snatch' If you like this.

Both films are very watchable hence why I bought the set to watch again however only Evolution has subtitles whilst Underworld has none...which is no good as Im deaf and rely on subtitles..so anyone who relies on subtitles, avoid this boxset!
