DVD : To Be The Best - Barbara Taylor Bradford [1991]
I was a big fan of BTB's Emma Harte triology (OK, now 6 books) - with are all fantastic! The Woman of Substance film was great, it followed the plot of the book reasonably well. However, I found the third installment most disappointing, as it greatly deviates from, and even cheapens, the premise of the third novel.

The story of the film is much different from the book, and not in the usual book-to-movie amendments that would be expected. Alexander Barkstone has been made into a bumbling fool who contributes to the weakening the Hartes stores through an "un-Sandy like" trait of excessive gambling, Shane O'Neill is a territorial, arrogant, dominant male who now begrudges his wife's work (and his hotels have become a 'middling' concern), ... Perhaps I am a softie or a romantic, but I can't agree with many who pan this film. It is far from the greatest of films, but it was touching in many ways. It is rather formulaic, but the formula works here for the most part. A rich upstart teenager comes into a small town and manages to get into a fight with a local and burn down the local diner. In a made-for-television kind of Solomonic wisdom, the judge sentences them to work together to rebuild the diner, Mabel's Table, the 'hot spot' of this whistle-stop town. Rich out-of-towner and local boy fight over the local girl, who has a tragic secret she is concealing.

Leelee Sobieski, plays the lead as Samantha, the local girl track star whose knee gave out, jeopardising her chance to go to ... Read More:

It would be pleasant to report that this tale of missing diamonds is itself a bit of a hidden gem. Hidden because most people I know have no idea whether their DVDs can play Region 1 discs. Therefore they would not consider buying or borrowing it.

However, it would be more accurate to say that the film contains treasures which are partly obscured by other factors.
The cinematography is excellent: the stunning landscapes and vibrant colours are shown to their best advantage. Visually, this is a feast.

However, I got muddled trying to follow the plot. There was just too much double-crossing. The flashbacks did not help.

The "burn" part of the title is more appropriate than the "slow" part. The cast looked ... Read More:
