"Topsy Turvy" is more than just a "play within a play" although it works very well at that level. We see the genesis of Gilbert and Sullivan's best-known work "The Mikado" after the partnership has gone through a low spell, and get enough scenes from its staging (and that of other G & S "Savoy operas") to satisfy all but the keenest of Savoayards. We enjoy immensely the way in which the premiere is rehearsed and pulled together under Gilbert's dictatorial directorship. It is all very funny but there is a darker side in the world outside. This box set, along with Abigail's Party and Happy-Go-Lucky (both available separately), will give you a comprehensive - and comprehensively moving and hilarious - understanding of Mike Leigh's vision. He's always painted in broad strokes, with sometimes heavy-handed caricatures, but within those strokes are subtle moments of great emotional truth, and this set proves how versatile Leigh has been within different genres. I think this has to be one of the most under-rated Bristish films out there. OK so it's not for everyone, if you're looking for a braindead rom-com this probably wont be up your alley. If you're looking for a highly humane drama with excellent acting and music and script then look no further. Not only that but repeated viewings expose more and more details from the interlocking stories. Brilliant!

I watch this film even when the kids aren't around, its a superb film from beginning to end if you're aged 4 or 94. Its a little frightening in places but not too bad for small children. The make-up is fantastic and Anjelica Huston plays the best witch on screen since the Wizard Of Oz....really powerful and evil. I won't spoil the ending but its clever funny and they all get their just desserts 'so to speak'. One of Rowan Atkinsons better parts, Jane Horrocks' cameo role is delightful. You get the feel that this is exactly how Roald Dahl would have wanted the film to be like - full marks !!!
